Bank Holiday Weekend Part 1

My first excursion on Saturday morning was somewhere I went last year and the year before........ the Crowfield Church Flower Festival and mini fete. Headed straight to the book tent where they sell them cheaply at 50p each or 3 for £1 and spent £2 on 6 books.
Two more children's  Christmas books for the future, when I do advent book parcels for grandchildren. Plus "Where the Wild Things Are", now a classic - frightens me but apparently children like it! The book titled "I thought I heard" is the opposite.......... a lovely reassuring book explaining the noises in the night.
A Mary Wesley, that I've not read  for me (and when I got home I found I had a copy already. -Bother! I'll pass it on to a charity shop) And the rather interesting looking Medieval Cookbook............... a British Library publication in perfect condition. It's got recipes converted for modern use and uses illustrations from books and paintings in the British Museum. I don't think it's ever been opened.

Then I went into the church.........an interesting theme for the flower arrangements................Baskets, All Shapes and Sizes.

I liked this one - Bicycle Basket titled Last Of The Summer Wine
This one is by the war memorial plaque titled  Remembrance......... with a basket of knitted poppies
Log Basket
Up, up and away in a balloon basket

Then I had a cuppa and a cheese scone............still plenty of boxes of books in the book tent  and lots of jigsaw puzzles outside. (sugar on all the tables - not for me!)
This model of the church is  on display every year
And one of the old crosses from the roof, replaced in 2014

During the rest of the day I  popped over to see Son and DIL and Willow and also got organised for the next bit of work in the bedroom -  skirting board and window sills.

One of the random things about this house we found when we moved in was that several bits of skirting board are not fixed to the walls, heavens know why. This has turned out to be a Good Thing as I was able to just lift out the bit of skirting board where the new bath is going and paint it to be used to fill the gap in the bedroom. Handy!

Back Tomorrow

  1. Three for £1 is a brilliant price! Lovely books (I agree with you about the WTWTA, I don't enjoy reading it, but the grandchildren enjoy it) and I'm glad you found some for yourself. The medieval one should be interesting, you will be baking manchets and pottage before you know it!

I almost don't notice the flowers, I get so interested in the displays they build around them. I really enjoy the witty interpretations, they must have such a lot of fun gathering suitable bits and pieces. Sounds like you had a lovely day and I am glad you got to see the family, especially little Willow!

  2. What a nice selection of books at a great price. I tend to have trouble at a good sale like that as I'm likely to get too many! I love your idea of collecting Christmas books for advent gifts. The flower displays are lovely. I especially like the Bicycle Basket. It looks like you've had a nice weekend!

  3. Those basket displays are simply stunning. Such a lot of care and dedication to detail there. They must have been wonderful to see them 'in the flesh', so to speak.
The cookery book looks fascinating - will you be trying any of the recipes?

  5. The model church is exquisite. You were very restrained faced with such bargain books!

  6. When we moved into our house we found that wherever the previous owner had had a piece of furniture they had removed the skirting board...…. So you could have skirting board, gap, skirting board, gap, skirting board along every wall in a room! We had to replace all the skirting board in the whole house because of this! People do do some odd things don't they! glad it worked in your favour in this case.

  7. I love a local fayre, book tent sounds wonderful. I always find it strange what the previous owners have done to their homes. Years ago we moved into a big family house, where the previous owners had painted all the wall, but only use three different colours, so many rooms matched, it look really bizarre.

  8. Liked the flower arrangements very much. Modern in style and not overly tweaked. Good haul on the books again and like you, I don’t like WTWTA book. Happy painting.

  9. That was a good price for the books. I think you were very restrained as I'm sure I would have spent a lot more than that. It'll be interesting to see what the medieval cookery one reveals.

  12. Loks like you had a good day - the books are a good find. I like the bike and the unusual poppy displays. Your skirtings made me smile - at least it has saved you some hard work and will fill in the gap nicely.

  13. The baskets are beautiful, I especially like the bike and balloon ones. Some people are very good at thinking out of the box. Hardly visited any blogs this summer so I'm way behind with everyone's news and happenings, but I hope you are keeping well. xx

  15. Great book bargains. You have inspired me to go out looking for a new batch. I haven’t bought any lately. The bicycle basket arrangement is my favourite.

  16. Maurice Sendak, the author of "Where the Wild Things Are" said when interviewed that this book (and two others he wrote) were a kind of trilogy focused on children's growth, survival, change, and fury. He suggested that the three books were "all variations on the same theme: how children master various feelings – danger, boredom, fear, frustration, jealousy – and manage to come to grips with the realities of their lives." All I know is that my children, and now their children, all love the book, so clearly it deeply touches childhood feelings. A good find.

  22. That is a nice bunch of books you were able to get. I thought the cookbook was interesting too. I go to a few of our local libraries when they have their book sales and have gotten some pretty good deals. I once got an entire Nancy Drew series for free. Nobody else wanted them and it was the last day for the sale so they gave them to me for free. I also can get DVDs from some of the sales.

  23. My mom bought the Donkey of Nazareth for my cousins children several years ago. She used to wade through book magazines and when she found something she liked or thought would be a good gift, I'd get a call, and I'd order it and send it along via Amazon. She loved to read and so do I. Have worn out another Kindle...
