Muttering About My Neighbours and A Quick Visit to a Jumble Sale

Next door neighbours are having an extension on the back of their house, well I assume they are as they haven't actually said. I know when they moved in a year ago they wanted to buy some of the field behind their house and our garden - but as far as I know the farmer wouldn't sell.  They have the builders there digging out the footings and all the earth is being put on the bank of the ditch opposite the other houses in the lane. That's fine. BUT to make room to put the earth they've cut down the big Elder tree. The tree where I got the berries from to make the lovely Elderberry syrup last year. I felt really sad when I came home yesterday and found it down. Elders are not everyone's favourite tree, but I like them. I do hope they apologised profusely to the tree when it was cut, it's very unlucky not too.

I do love it when people running jumble sales sell things super cheap because they don't want to pack them all away. This one was at Eye Bowls Club a couple of weeks ago and there was a big queue to get in.

I only stopped in for a few minutes because I wanted to "do" a church, deliver a birthday card and get home with enough time left to cut the grass while it was dry and before the sun disappeared.

The box  on the left is full of little books for the alphabet letters with things to do in each book...........so that will be saved for a few years time. The box on the right has 8 board books each with a nursery rhyme just right for Willow and the tractor and trailer are ready for Jacob's next visit. I also got a trike and a small dolls pram, the whole lot for  £5.50 - Good value I reckon

( The box of ABC books says  "will keep your little ones entertained for hours"........that's just so unlikely!)

  1. I hate it when a tree comes down - it makes me sad. All that history and energy, just gone.

  2. Sue, my heart goes out to you. I had two small Elder trees on my back wall and they were brutally macheted by a previous owner on the other side, not once but twice! Broke my heart, and I apologised to the trees for his behaviour. Don't ask what is going on there now, trees bulldozed and destroyed. Great bargains, btw.

    1. People don't value Elders as they aren't big, or have useful wood but I love to see the flowers in the spring and the berries for the birds

  3. What lovely things you find. I agree about the tree. It makes me sad when a tree goes.

  4. How rude of the neighbours not to let you know the building work was starting, especially in such a small community. Cutting down Elder is bad karma however much you apologise, but things will "balance out" for them before the project is finished.

  5. Another great haul at a bargain price. Such a shame about the tree.

  6. Lovely bargains. Those will keep the children busy for sure.

Sorry about the loss of the tree.

    God bless.

  7. Neighbours can be very rude, but when our neighbours at the back cut down a tree in the copse, we were kept informed all the time, and watched the rather sad progress. Sometimes I think the space left still contains a shadow of the spirit of the tree. Speak up to them ;)

  8. Wasn’t a building permit notice displayed in their property before the work started?

  9. Brilliant purchases. Neighbours, you need to check, you should have been informed by planning. Shame about the tree too.

    1. The extension isn't a problem even though I wasn't informed but it's just the tree I feel sad about

  10. It is so sad when a beautiful, old tree is cut down. So many years go into the growth yet so little consideration in the destruction.

  11. A lot of extensions fall under the permitted development rights now but if it did require planning you should have been informed as you are then able to object (should you have wanted to).
I think it is sad that people buy houses with trees and then have them all cut down. We are always having problems with our little wood in Scotland and through neighbourly intervention Scottish Power took three large trees out and chopped our hedge running alongside the road down to ground level without, and all without our knowledge - our neighbour had implied he owned the land and he dislikes our trees as it blocks the view of his pub from the road and the sun on his decking - Scottish Power apologised to us for the error but of course it takes 30 years for a new tree to grow to full size and we probably don't have 30 years left! But I too think karma will sort it out...so I just sit and wait.

    1. Oh No - your own trees that's much much worse. The Elder that has gone didn't really belong to anyone as it's on the ditch side of the lane. No one really owns the lane or the land by the ditch so I can't complain and I wouldn't anyway.

    1. Me too although sometimes, like the ones on our meadow they are planted to be cut for firewood. We planted a couple of 100 at the smallholding, I hope they haven't all been cut down

  14. When I moved, the new owner cut down my Cox's Orange Pippin! And pruned the pear tree so much that I feared it would not recover. I had many many pounds of pears off it while I was there, and did keep it pruned.
About the jumble sale toys - if they're like my grandchildren, you'll probably find Jacob playing with the pram, and Florence and Willow with the tractor!

    1. The neighbours are very tidy people! Their garden is spotless and that includes the bit shes done opposite the house.

Getting Jacob away from his cars is the problem!

  15. My experience with elder is that you can't get rid of them, even with a flamethrower. Hope that it will sprout back and you get another chance to make the syrup.

    1. They are usually pretty tenacious. At the smallholding we had a bit that insisted on growing between the house wall and the concrete path - a bit about half an inch wide!

  17. I always used to laugh at declarations of 'will keep your little ones entertained for hours' or 'hours of fun ' ... who are they kidding. If only eh 🤣🤣

    Poor Elder tree 😕

  18. Lovely finds! It's horrible about the tree. Sad that it was cut down. I don't think people think sometimes - they are too busy thinking about themselves. Sigh.
