June WI

I had put my name down to take two posies/bunches of flowers for people with June birthdays at Big WI this month. So had a rummage around the garden.

The speaker at Big WI was a lady from a company called OneSuffolk running courses on behalf of Suffolk County Council for healthy living. They do 12 week weight loss courses, stop smoking groups, liaise with school nurses to work with families with over-weight children and organise health walks.

I don't smoke but could do with losing a few stone. Came home and looked on line at their website for anything around this area - Nothing! They work mainly in the deprived areas of Suffolk so have loads of groups in Ipswich and Lowestoft. But something they can do is to give vouchers for 12 weeks for free at Slimming World, although I'd rather do their 12 week course as it looks at the mindset and reasons for over eating.

Coffee and cake(ironically we all ate some!) after the speaker of course and during refreshment time 3 people said how much they had enjoyed my short talk about house-moving and smallholding at last month's meeting. That was nice to hear. They said what an interesting life we had had - just seemed normal to me! but I guess it was a bit different to some people who might have only moved once or twice and stayed at the same job.

Back Tomorrow

  1. I am totally with you on the ‘seemed normal to me’ as I used to give talks to lots of different groups about my life. Folk would say the same to me and as I drove home I would try to imagine what people’s perception was, and how to me it was the norm. Ordinary folk living ordinary lives... we might say?

    1. I suppose we never thought about what we were doing - just did it!

  2. I wonder how much of yours and my weight has to do with life's recent events for us both? Need to lose a few stone here too. Eating an entire bar of chocolate didn't do me any favours yesterday. Good luck!

    1. My excess is due to eating too much and loving all the wrong food better than the right food and having no willpower! At least I have stayed the same for quite a few years now instead of going up and down

  3. Your meeting sounded interesting, I go to WI next week and the meeting is a talk from a lady called "Lighten the Load" it's about designing a low maintenance garden which I am looking forward to. It's raining her this morning and we have Thames Water men working out side on the close.

    1. The low maintenance garden sounds very good to me as I've just spent a while cutting the brambles and nettles out of the front hedge!

  6. Maybe it's because you and Col had a plan from the start about a small holding and self sufficiency and did something about it, whilst the majority of us (me included) just drifted along taking what life threw at us.

    1. I guess we knew that we couldn't ever afford land unless we kept working toward it.

  7. Such pretty posies -lucky recipients. I am sure people will be interested in your life story - I have spent the week watching 63Up - sometimes even the most normal of lives of other people can be interesting to listen to but I think a life where you have tried to be self sufficient is even more so.

  8. What pretty posies.

I'm on a diet (have lost 3 lbs in 8 days) - just calorie counting, which works best for me because there are all sorts of things which affect my histamine levels and affect my asthma, so are best avoided. I have surprised myself with my willpower . . . Good luck with your diet.

  9. I hope you find a weight loss plan that works for you. I changed to a low fat diet last year, due to thyroid and cholesterol issues and have since lost a stone and a half. This is a permanent lifestyle change now and I cannot go back to my previous bad habits (cchocolate, cheese, meat etc) or it will undo all the benefits. I do miss it sometimes though.

    1. I've been yo-yoing up and down with my weight since 1979, so at least I've now stayed the same for a while, even if it is too much

  10. I have been trying to lose weight as well. So far 22 lbs, but it is going slowly. No 10 lb losses for me anymore.

    God bless.

  11. Hi Sue, I'm doing Slimming World at the moment and have to say I am very impressed with it. 12 weeks free is a good saving! Love your posies.

  12. Pretty posies Sue, how wonderful that it all came from the garden. I could do with losing some weight, maybe we should start an online support group.

  13. Your little bouquets are so pretty with such beautiful color. I'm with you on the willpower. I have none of it - especially when it comes to sweets. I just love to eat, basically! But I keep trying and belong to Weight Watchers here in the US. I think it's similar to your Slimming World.

  14. Love your birthday posie, Sue. I need to lose a bit of weight, but I'm just doing some calorie counting and trying to up my exercise. I find it's a bit easier in the summer, more salads and more seasonal fruits available. But it's still hard going.

  15. My brother and his wife have taken advantage of the 12 weeks at Slimming World. They are losing about 2lbs a week each. I wish we had something like this in Canada.
