17th December - Advent Photo

This is one of those books that gives you dozens of ideas on how to make wonderful Christmassy things. A book that's been on my shelves for years waiting for me to use the ideas,  it was published in 1996 and I see my copy was from a charity shop for 80p.

As it's a Dorling Kingsley it is mainly photographs. Ideas and instructions to trim your tree, your table, your fireplace, your front door and the presents - lovely photos but it would need many hours and more enthusiasm than I've ever had for making things!

The salt-dough camels above caught my eye - pretty - and with the salt dough crowns in the bottom right corner of the page are used to decorate a "We Three Kings" themed tree.

It's been so handy doing this book advent photo thing - made me look at the books properly - bet you've guessed this book has gone in the charity shop bag!

  1. As soon as I saw the first inside picture I guessed that you were not taking it with you when you move! I used to have several DK books - all very similar in style to that one - lovely to look at, but I never made anything/ copied anything from them. And Ziffit and similar never want them, either - so mine also made their way to the charity shop over the years! :)

  2. Such a beautiful book - what a shame it's not moving with you. Fair enough though, one rarely actually makes anything, it's the browsing that is the pleasure.

  3. Lovely ideas, but like you, I'd never make any of them. Oh, well, we can dream! I've got knitting/crochet/needlepoint/cross stitch books that fall into the same category, but I have real trouble getting rid of them. Maybe one day... xx

  5. Well is a lovely sunny day at the moment makes such a different.
Like Happy Hooker I have lots of craft books I kept them all when I moved but now I am very slowly taking them to the charity shop, they are very big and heavy so I will not be posting them anywhere.
The cards are posted and most presents are wrapped it seems so unreal this Christmas, things are so different but at lease we are still healthly.

  6. I remember seeing this book when it first came out and it seems to be the same type as the glossy Christmas magazines, that if I buy one I ask myself, "Why did I buy this"?

  7. I used to have lots of DK books like that one but they have all long since gone. This one, if I had had it, would have been one of the first to go as it would have just made my 'lob tinsel in the direction of the mirror' style of decorating seem so pathetic!!

I'm enjoying your book advent, it's amazing how Christmas books gradually accumulate isn't it.

  8. Sue, I'd be happy to buy it off you and pay postage, if you were willing to post it.

    1. There are some paperback versions on amazon for 1p! So more cost effective for you from there as its a big hardback and would cost a lot to post + I haven't got any padded bags big enough!

  9. What a lovely book. I used to make salt-dough centrepieces for the Christmas table, as well as salt-dough figures which I painted and sold at car boot sales. When my bigs were smalls this was, so 25 years or so ago.

We have the wreath to make yet but need to carry on with the Junk Room of Doom first . . .

  11. I had one of those books - pretty to look at and consider making something- but never did. It went out the door when we downsized in 2016.

  12. I remember one year I made salt dough ornaments and they turned out very nice. I used my Christmas cookie cutters to make them and of course painted them when they were done. That book has a lot of good ideas!

  14. I made salt dough ornaments for our first Christmas with our 9 mo. old daughter. I still have most of them. I shellacked them with clear nail polish, thank goodness.

  16. Yikes!! Just looking at the pictures scares me. I can't help thinking about the cost involved with having to buy everything to put it together. Not in my budget! But it is an interesting book to look at at least once.

  17. I have seen cookies that are complete works of art. I have to say, if I had the time to do this, the first person who actually dared to put that cookie in his mouth would never be forgiven!
