December 7th - Advent Photo + 4 Book Giveaway

A Very Small and famous book- I  found it for grandchildren's Advent book parcels last year but it isn't really a  book for very small children. So I'll keep it for when they older.

Dylan Thomas originally wrote this little work of prose for radio in 1952 and it then went into book form and has been reprinted many times since.

"All the Christmases roll down toward the two-tongued sea, like a cold and headlong moon bundling down the sky that was our street; and they stop at the rim of the ice-edged, fish-freezing waves, and I plunge my hand in the snow and bring out whatever I can find. . ."

Dylan Thomas's lyrical account of his childhood Christmases in a small Welsh town, featuring wolves, bears, hippos and Mrs Prothero's cat, has become deservedly famous. Beautifully illustrated by award-winning artist Edward Ardizzone, this classic edition is beloved by fans of Thomas's work and a perfect Christmas gift for young readers building their own childhood Christmas memories.

And here are the four Christmas crime books that I've read and would like to pass on.

Leave a comment if you would like one, say which one unless you don't mind (UK only please) and I'll pick out names tomorrow and put comment moderation on so you can leave an address. The books are wrapped ready to send so once I get names and addresses they'll soon be in the post before Christmas.

Back Tomorrow
Sue

  1. Woke up this morning to find we have a covering of snow. One day the forecasters will get it right! Our boiler has gone on the blink recently and...yes...today's the day we are having it replaced! Thank goodness for the log burner. What a generous offer to have a draw for 4 crime books - please add my name - my first choice would be for the short stories. Thanks for the opportunity to win. Have a good week and let's hope there's no more of the white stuff! Vicki in the East Riding

  8. Murder in Advent intrigues me most, but Murder at the Old Vicarage would be good too (not that being a Clergy Wife means I would personally consider it....)

  13. That Dylan Thomas children's book looks brilliant, I didn't even know there was one. Your grandchildren will appreciate that being read to them one day ... preferably in a lovely lilting Welsh accent.

I won't go into the draw for a book, although I do love your generosity in sending them off to new homes. Instead I have a couple of Christmas books of my own I need to read through before the big day otherwise they will be waiting until next Christmas ... AGAIN!!

    1. Its a lovely book, that edition is very small, an ideal childrens book. The language is so lovely you have to read it out loud. I've got it sat here with a stack of Christmas books for visiting ( or not , dang covid !!! ) grandchildren.

Oh, I don't have a google account so can't reply on some blogs. When I saw your post on the Emma Bridgewater Christmas ornaments I couldn't resist them and ordered the HoHoHo and Jolly mugs, too cute for words. I got them on Black Friday so they were 20% off. They will be for my two daughters next Christmas so thank you for mentioning them !!!

  20. Sorry, I forgot to add that some years ago Cerys Matthews produced a wonderful reading of a Child's Christmas in Wales, broadcast on Radio 4, accompanied by music and Welsh folk telling tales of Christmasses past. I don't know if you are able to find it again on BBC Sounds but I would recommend it very highly as an essential part of Christmas listening.

  21. A very generous offer - I'm afraid I don't like parting with books. I was an avid library-user until lockdown, then I bought a Kobo reader to be able to access Powys libraries on-line. Libraries are still not open in mid-Wales, although you can order and collect. My sister-in-law lives in Stowmarket so I love reading about your doings in Suffolk. I'd be happy to receive any of the books.
