On the First Day After Christmas ...............

What a year, some people have had it really tough and heart-breakingly sad. My year hasn't been tough, just a little bit sad and dull in places, so to cheer up those quiet days after Christmas (and this was planned before things got even worse and we were shifted into Tier 4 AKA Lock-down) I decided not to buy the Folklore diary, The Almanac of the Year, an Advent Calendar and a present for Christmas Day but instead to have some special gifts for the 12 days of Old Christmas. I haven't wrapped them but have put them all in a box, (without looking at the books) and will take out one each day. At the moment there are only 8 things but hopefully I shall think of something else for the other days,

This must be sung!

On the First Day After Christmas
My Christmas treat will be
A whole tub of chocolates just for me

Yummy yum yum. I won't eat them all at once! (And I had more as a gift, so enough to last me all January at least)

Thank you to everyone for so many lovely comments yesterday. Hope everyone had a good day. I just about remembered how to cook a roast dinner for 3 grown ups and  one small person - difficult nowadays as it's such a rare occurrence. The Yorkshire puds were still in the freezer until I started dishing up - good thing they were the 4 minute ones!
We didn't eat or drink too much and I sent Brother in Law and Youngest daughter home with  some of the roast chicken.
Today I've a big heap of  dirty dishes to do- we didn't bother yesterday as there are plenty of days without visitors ahead. Then there are more presents to unwrap as yesterday I was busy in the kitchen in the morning and playing with Oldest Granddaughters new presents in the afternoon.

I've got 3 various DVDs to watch and later and some things are circled in the Radio Times so it will be a good day.

  1. Thanks for looking after my brother. What did he say to the purple carrots? Very quiet and weird here with just the two of us when I'm used to feeding so many more. A feeling echoed across the country I'm sure.

    1. Andrew has discovered a new talent for making dogs and a rabbit out of modelling balloons! and the purple and white carrots were good although I found the roast parsnips in the other oven after everyone had gone home! Would never had happened at your house!

    2. Reminds when we rolled up a big hankie and we made it into a rabbit or 2 babies in a cradle.

  2. Sounds like you had a nice day, but then you would be like me enjoy the time with your family. I had lots of phone calls, my D and GD called in and we exchanged presents, today my D is bringing Christmas dinner round for she has day of.
I hope everyone had a nice day at least the weather was good round our way.

  3. Glad you were kept busy making up for those when you aren't, lol. We had a lovely afternoon (had to get back for our dog) with daughter and her little family. I was given the Stilton cheeses, normal and Brie, to take home as they bought them just for me because I'm the only one who likes it.

  4. Are you sure you haven’t had a morning tipple? Signed off twice like a hiccup! Do hope your ditch across the road is coping with the rain.

    1. Thats what happens due to typing half a post one day and half another and not reading before publishing!

  5. I'm glad you had such a lovely day, and saving the washing up for another day sounds like a brilliant idea. It will be a Christmas we all remember for sure!!

  6. What a good way to keep yourself entertained over the 12 days of Christmas. Enjoy!

BTW - After all that relatively warm rain (12c) and high wind I mentioned on Christmas Eve, we ended Christmas Day with a covering of snow (fortunately didn't stick to the roads) and -6 temp this morning. Can't remember the last time we had snow on Christmas Day.

  10. Glad you had a good day. We've just had bubble and squeak made with the left over veggies from yesterday - yum! Certainly a year to remember (or forget!). xx

  11. I'm putting the house back to rights again, making a nice pan of scalloped potatoes out of a portion of the ham, moving the presents to where they will belong, packing up all the wrapping materials. There's a quiet satisfaction to that as well. I'm glad your day was a good one.

  12. I am happy for you that you had family out and enjoyed your Christmas! We had one son and his family out and had a good day as well. I also had a sink piled with dishes this morning and I did one load last night! The family is worth it. Your day after treat looks yummy, those are the best! I'm glad you are doing the days after Christmas - you deserve it!

  13. Brilliant idea about the twelve days of Christmas. I try to stick to them but it is hard in a country which firmly tosses out Christmas on Jan 1st. I am waiting to see if people hang on to the decorations a bit longer this year because it does cheer things up during lockdown. I have some fairy lights strung across the windows on the inside, I'm planning to keep those going until Spring. I also have a double lot of Lindor, managing to control my intake to two a day but I may weaken. Thanks for the inspiration on so many levels. Your commonsense is a tonic.
