Summer Stitching

First a tennis update......Lovely to see more Brits winning at Queens Club on the grass courts yesterday. Although of course there aren't many top players there so we stand more chance! Good to see Andy Murray back after all the trials and tribulations of hip replacements and  injuries. He got through easily in two sets.
I still haven't watched any of the Euro football matches properly all the way through, always reading or writing at the same time, then they all shout and I find I've missed the goal! Mostly I've turned over after a while to watch something on iplayer.
*************

Must be a year or even more since I did any cross stitching but I had an idea to make a little sampler to fill a frame I already had to add to my art wall.

I'm making it up as I go along using ideas from two samplers I've done in the past and some ideas from other charts.

For an awful 10 minutes I thought I'd lost this cross stitch chart book in the move. Surely I'd not taken it with other craft books to the charity shop? found it at the bottom of the box of cross stitch fabric and kits....phew.... along with it's companion book of numbers.

Stitching from the bottom up is not really the way you're supposed to tackle a bit of cross stitching... ...although it could be from the top down until I stitch a house and a text.........  but it's how this one will be done so as to keep to the right size.

  1. I had an urge to do cross stitching last week, I found a little tin in which I'd packed some keyring with little tags about 1½"square designed to hold a bit of Aida. There was a card wrapped with odd lengths of thread and a needle. One evening's stitching, and a couple of stockingfillers made! I can sew in summer but I find knitting makes my hands sweat.

    1. So you probably started stitching about the same time as me -Another strange coincidence!

  2. Stitching and heat doesn't do my hands any kindness, so it's a winter pastime for me. Your charts look really pretty. I was taught cross stitch begins in the middle! It's a bit of a faff counting the holes out though.

    1. Yes starting from the middle is the right way but have no plan here so will just go upwards until it fills the frame!

  3. Your stitching will be something different to do, I love Samplers I have 12 on my wall plus 4 maps, a few years ago I did on linen the map of America for my daughter

    1. I'd have liked to have done one on even-weave or something better than 14 count aida but it would end up too fiddly and I'd never finish it!

  4. Lovely stitching. Yes it was good to see Andy play but apparently, his groin still isn’t right and no-one can find what’s causing it.

  5. I used to do embroidery some time back, before it got so busy that I no longer had time. A couple years back, I got the idea to do it again, now that I've got more time. My eyes are not strong enough to do close up work anymore, which was a bit of a shock.

    1. I have to have my reading glasses on and a good light and 14 holes per inch fabric - otherwise I can't see a thing!

  6. I think I used to have that book, but I have had a massive clear out of craft books before moving. (Plus 4 HUGE bags of material for patchwork which I gave to our patchwork teacher. She makes quilts for charity).

You have made me really want to pick up my needle again - so far all I've done is a crappy cushion for the Lloyd Loom chair we acquired in a garage clearance and mended 2 pairs of socks!

Whilst you "should" start in the middle when you are working from a chart, when you are winging it, start where you like!

    1. Yes, took a photo this morning while the sun was shining, to make a change on the blog

  8. Not sure if I just haven't been observant enough to know when it changed, but I like your header photo. The house seems lovely and just the right size for you. Being in walking distance of village life has to be a great treat--this from someone who lives out in the country where a car is absolutely required for everything.

I've got plenty of materials to do most kinds of fabric crafting from sewing, embroidery, needlepoint, knitting and beyond. Plan to go through my yarn stash today to send quite a bit to my DIL. The reality is I simply won't ever get through it all myself so want to pass it on. But you do remind me that a bit of cross-stitching can be a soothing experience--as long as one doesn't lose count!

    1. I only changed the header this morning after I took the photo while the sun was shining.
I'm enjoying doing this sampler and making it up as I go. I'm now doing a little house, which will have my name and house name under it

  10. Love your new house too. I have on my list to have a go at some cros stitch or embroidery - but I rather think I am going to be too busy this year to do anything - so I will admire yours. Happy stitching.

Cross stitch is an nice craft to do while watching TV! Then I don't feel guilty about watching TV! :)

  13. I assume that is your house at the top - I love it and am sure you will be happy there.

  14. Your new bungalow looks very pretty, almost cottage like. I started a millenium cross stitch in 1998, finally finished it ten years later!

  15. Love the picture of the bungalow. Modern but somehow still very Suffolk!
Looks like you've picked a good one.

  16. I always start mine in top left corner, which is OK until you realise you don't have enough fabric. Happened a couple of times but I never learn.

  17. The bungalow looks beautiful. I am so envious, it was definitely worth all the hassle and the long wait.
I feel like doing a bit of cross stitch but its far too hot at the moment. Is it weird that I'm beginning to think of making Christmas gifts? 🤪

  18. The house looks lovely! A proper little English bungalow. Although we have an upstairs, most houses in Australia are single story, can be very hot upstairs in our summers. In our long lock-in last winter I did a large x stitch with a Celtic pattern on linen, hadn't picked it up for years. I found if I put strong reading glasses over my multifocals it worked very well looking down and I could still look up and see the tv.The problems of age!

  19. I love your new header. You have a beautiful new home well worth the wait! The cross stitching you are doing will be a wonderful addition to your art wall. I love the thought of a sampler of a house that represents your new home.

  20. Your house is very lovely. The tile pattern on the roof and bright white front with dark colored doors make it really striking. I agree with Bonnie, you should consider doing a cross stitch of your home for your art wall.
