10 Books that I had reserved were collected from the mobile library van yesterday.
As usual most are crime fiction.
Best of the bunch will be The Consequence of Fear, the most recent offering from Jacqueline Winspear. The two by Alys Clare are her most recent in two different series. There are two more British Library Crime Classics, one by Mary Kelly and the other by Marie Belloc Lowndes. The authors Stuart Pawson and Anthony Horowitz are both authors I've tried to read before and for whatever reason haven't got into them - and I may not again this time.
Then 3 non-fiction. At the bottom of the pile is The Garden farmer by Francine Raymond which I've borrowed before but can't remember anything about it. Afloat by Danie Couchman is about living on board a narrow boat and finally I'm really looking forward to Josie George - A Still Life which has had several good reviews on blogs.
The books I've read in the last few weeks are all listed on the separate Books Read 2021 page.

A lovely selection of books and just nice to read in the garden.
ReplyDeleteI have a lovely long border not to wide in the front of the bungalow which I weeded yesterday and plan on putting the geraniums in today, I brought them from Morrisons the other day.

Hope it stayed fine for you to garden. I did a little but then it started raining
DeleteWish I could get back into reading, I seem to have lost my mojo as far as that is concerned.
ReplyDeleteWish I could help you find your reading mojo but it's never happened to me so have no idea
DeleteOh I do hope you enjoy "A Still Life". I've started following her on Instagram, she posts such stunning photographs of beautiful yet ordinary things
ReplyDeleteThat's my next to read
DeleteI just read through the reviews of Still Life and they are weird, obviously a lot written by her Twitter followers who feel they already know her. Some said it was like a self help book for pain sufferers (they gave it 5 stars). One woman didn't finish it through boredom (she gave it 1 star). I wonder what you will think of it. I suppose it has a kind of niche market in terms of readership.
ReplyDeleteI'll let you know how I get on
DeleteThe Consequences of Fear will not disappoint. :)
ReplyDeleteThat will be my favourite of the lot I reckon
DeleteI loved A Still Life. She writes beautifully of everyday things.
ReplyDeleteI hope I enjoy it - we shall see..........
DeleteWhen you have time I would love to read where you grew up...your younger life...ending up last few homes...books look good
ReplyDeleteI don't tend to write much about the past as my blog is a diary of the here and now.
DeleteThe Maisie Dobbs series is one of my all time favorites. I can't wait to hear if you like the new one. And of course I love British Crime Library. Magpie Murders is different from Horowitz' others and I really liked it. Soon to be a movie with Lesley Manville in the editor's role.
ReplyDeleteI hope she keeps writing them forever! but that is probably to much to hope for
DeleteMagpie Murders is very good. Quite a whodunit. If that's the last Maisie Dobbs that I read it wasn't as good as the others. She's not doing well as a single parent. Now I can't find the title of the last one I read. Oh well. Let us know how you like it.
ReplyDeleteI opened Magpie murders and was immediately put off as parts are written in two different type-faces - for a reason I don't know yet.
DeleteLooks an enticing group of books. I read loads during lockdown and am always on the lookout for recommendations.
ReplyDeleteHope you can get a few ideas from my blog
DeleteI was lucky to get The Consequences of Fear from the library and enjoyed it. Hope you do too!
ReplyDeleteI know I will
DeleteI love the Jacqueline Winsprear novels, Sue, and this is a good 'un. I don't know that Francine Raymond book, but I've read a couple of hers and loved them.
ReplyDeleteMargaret P
I've loved all the Maisie Dobbs series
DeleteDo you read the Inspector Gamache series by Louise Penny? The first i the series is coincidentally called Still Life. Set in Canada, best read in order. [don't be put off by Canadian setting, it adds instead of detracting.] crime series.
ReplyDeleteThey are fabulous, I’m waiting to get hold of the latest one...
DeleteI have tried these a few times but each time didn't get into them - don't know why
DeleteOh and I recommend my current series reread, DI Peterson Devon crime series by Kate Ellis. Read in order or not. Sub plots abound, always one about archaeology, another historic. All tie in somehow at the end.
ReplyDeleteYes I've read all of Kate Ellis' books
DeleteYou have a wonderful selection of books for the month. Looking forward to seeing what you have to say about them.
ReplyDeleteGod bless.
I know I will love some but not sure about others
DeleteFYI - If you ever get a chance to access the audio versions of almost all of the Maisie Dobbs series, you will love the narration. Orlagh Cassidy (actress) does a remarkable job of bringing the characters and stories to life. My library offers downloads that I can access through my tablet. A great way to go back and revisit the books while you are doing other things like knitting or working around the house.
ReplyDeleteI don't do audio books - hate being read to!
