The 3rd and final Rural Bygones Auction of 2022 took place a couple of weeks ago and as usual I went to have a look on viewing day just to see what rusty junk interesting items were for sale this time.
These are 4 out of the 8 old prints that were for sale. They used to hang in railway carriages back in the hey day of train travel. One was Norfolk and the others much further away. They were in a much poorer condition than my two Suffolk ones that hang in the hallway here.
The tattiest collection of taxidermy ever - think they should have gone in a bin years ago!
A gift for the House Maid in your life?

Interesting to see but I wouldn't want to own any of them.
ReplyDeleteOut of 1000 lots there was nothing I wanted enough to leave a bid
DeleteNow I shall be humming "Any old irons, any old irons" all morning. Did those sad stuffed creatures sell? Why would somebody buy them? I like the idea of an Improved Housemaid having her own box. And as for the ACME washer-mangle-cleanser-all-in-one... Well, wouldn't the maid-of-all-work just lve to wrestle with that on a Monday morning. The hwb/loo roll holders look odd to me, wouldn't want one in my bathroom.! Sue these photos are great, a good reminder of how much easier housekeeping is than in Great Grandma's day!
ReplyDeleteLoved the washing machines - what hard work Mondays were then
Deletemy gran ironed with flat irons on her range back in the 60s , it might be making a comeback with the price of fuel,,,lol
ReplyDeleteI had a tiny flat iron sitting around for years as a dust collector but gave it away when I moved here
DeleteIt's always fascinating to wander around these kind of events. For some of us, we're seeing things that we grew up with. I would have been sorely tempted to bid on that box of postcards. Just to have a good old nose through them myself. Their fascinating things. Can always put them up on eBay later.
ReplyDeleteI think the postcards were the only things that looked interesting to me
DeleteI like the glass bottle I have no idea where I would put it. Always interesting things in an auction

People often used to use them to fill with small change for charity but no one uses cash much now
DeleteIt's true what they say - one man or woman's junk is another's treasure.
ReplyDeleteI think most would have sold to someone -
DeleteWalsham in Suffolk was featured last night in Lucy Worsleys program on the Plague because of the extensive records on Walsham. The show looked at a farmer and his family and how 3 generations died in the plague. The show looked at the village and talked to the local historian. It was the most interesting historical program Ive seen on Suffolk and it showed how the plague spread in the area coming from France on ships. The records from Walsham were amazing, all in Latin, but they had transcripts.
ReplyDeleteI'll check that out
DeleteIt is surprising to see what some people choose to collect. I've never seen so many irons! As they say, there is a buyer for anything.
ReplyDeleteGoodness knows what they did with all those irons
DeleteI might have been tempted by that 'posher' Acme washing machine - no electricity needed!!! You could swish away to your heart's content with one eye on the telly! Lol, lol.
ReplyDeleteWe'll all be treading our washing in the bath soon to save electric
DeleteStuffed birds look as though the moths have got in their case.
ReplyDeleteSomeone bought them! Ugh!
DeleteThat looks as though it was a very interesting sale. I love the 'posh' washing machine and the child's dresser, but I think those poor birds should be given a good Christian burial!!
ReplyDeleteI looked to see if the birds sold and yes they did, I think for £65!
DeleteThank you for the link to the Auction, as Keith wanted to know how much the cannons went for! Interesting seeing the prices some of the things sold for. Cast iron pig troughs etc make much better prices in our neck of the woods.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Sue about the motheaten birds needing a good Christian burial! Definitely past their best!
Eek that taxidermy is rather creepy. As you say, they look a little past it lol. The postcards intrigue me. Jane had so many lovely ones. I kept some. It's so interesting to see how places have changed.
ReplyDeleteI agree the stuffed birds should probably have hit the bin a good while ago. Amazed that they sold for that much as I see in your reply to another poster.
ReplyDeleteGod bless.
