I'm very excited that the roots of wild garlic that Col's brother brought over last year have survived and small green shoots are starting to appear.
It's not common in Suffolk so when Andrew moaned about the smell of garlic in the wood (which he and a mate rent to haul out dead wood to sell) I asked him to dig up a few roots for me........ he brought a big bucket full.
There was no guarantee it would grow here, we are dryer than the wood it came from, but they are coming up everywhere we put them, it's certainly wet enough this year so far.
Other things are appearing down at the end of the meadow..............primroses...............
.............and the buds on a young willow that we planted in the Autumn.
And Colin is well enough to climb a ladder
So the Green Man has been fixed to keep an eye on the new trees
All is well in the new wood.
( No Gnomes!)
( No Gnomes!)
Thank you BTW for all gnome comments, the funny, the like them/hate them and everyone else.
I actually don't mind old concrete gnomes, it's the plastic-lurid-imported-from-China-ness of these that I don't like but if someone wants to help Asda make more millions then that's up to them.
Have a good weekend, stay warm in the snow and strong winds that are forecast.
Back Monday
Sue
So many signs of Spring and revival - it must give you a good feeling. And with Colin able enough to climb a ladder is like the icing on the cake.
ReplyDeleteWe've had no rain for a long tiime - brown is the new green in Melbourne. Just hoping we aren't heading for another drought. The last big one here in Victoria lasted 10 years!
I do hope your drought is short lived, there is definitely no water shortage here!
DeleteFields are wet and soggy and we have more snow already this morning. The farmers are getting behind with their work and we are fed up with the cold and damp. Hey Ho............Spring will arrive eventually.......I hope.
I am delighted to hear your wild garlic has survived! Just yesterday, when I was down in Owl Wood, I was trying to work out how I could get some to you if yours had failed. Now I won't need to, your lovely Green Man is sure to see it flourishes.
ReplyDeleteps Just for the record, I really do NOT like gnomes and Owl Wood is not home to any gnomes, plastic, concrete, or otherwise!!
Thank you for thinking about us and the garlic. It's looking hopeful, we spread it out well and several small clumps are through. If we get a dry summer I'll have to remember to chuck some water on it now and again.
DeleteI knew you didn't really want gaudy gnomes in Owl wood! I wouldn't mind a very old and faded stone or concrete one , he could lurk in the undergrowth near the fairy door!
How's it going your way? We've had (and are still having) some snow although it's not settling on roads and pathways.
ReplyDeleteI'm not a gnome-y person either but I'd love a stone bird bath if I saw one that really caught my eye. I cover my parents' bird bath no end!
J x
When we moved to the smallholding in 1992 we found an old bird-bath half buried under junk/rubbish/weeds and hauled it out. We brought it with us and although one corner of the plinth is broken I love it.
DeleteNice to see Colin able to do things again. Stay warm this weekend, we have everything crossed we miss the snow, we are on the edge of the yellow warning.
ReplyDeleteIt's lovely to have him well enough to do some things outside.
Deletewe have snow falling since dawn and very windy. The snow isn't laying on the driveway - only on grass and roofs
Love your green man and also that Col is well enough to be up a ladder.
ReplyDeleteHugs-x-
I regretted leaving our old green man at the smallholding so asked for this one for Christmas to keep an eye on the trees. It's lovely that Col can get outside to do a few jobs now
DeleteI've got that greenman too!
ReplyDeleteArilx
I'd like a really old one but modern plaster will have to do!
DeleteSo lovely to see signs of Spring. I have to confess to some garden bric a brac. No gnomes though and definitely no plastic. My poor plaster hedgehog is in two halves. I think the cold winter has finished him off. Great to see Colin out and about.
ReplyDeletePrevious owner left concrete family badger group - it's well weathered, so looks OK then we brought the stone birdbath from the smallholding and a weird concrete tree stump from Ipswich. I left my concrete frog at the smallholding.....I'd like another.
DeleteIt is so cold here, it really doesn't feel like Spring, although we saw lots of new shoots as we walked through the woods this morning. I remember when you mentioned the wild garlic last year, I'm so pleased it has taken for you. X
ReplyDeleteWe had spring......yesterday..........just 1 day! hope it returns very soon
Deleteplenty of wild garlic springing up round here Sue - I once tried making soup with the young leaves - it was disgusting.
DeleteSo good to see Col up and about. I'm sure it is wonderful for you both. I wonder if I can find a Green Man for our wood, it would remind me of home.
ReplyDeleteWe definitely need to get some wild garlic of our own, although I do know where there is lots growing not too far frm us now, it took some searching out though.
ReplyDeleteI bet Col enjoyed himself. So good when you can do stuff.
ReplyDeleteWill you use the wild garlic in cooking? I don't even know if you can eat it. My wild garlic knowledge is seriously lacking!
ReplyDeleteLove your Green man, I had not heard or seen one before. Wonderful that Col is getting outside and doing some small jobs, so great to see!!
ReplyDeleteIt's lovely that your wild garlic is going to do okay! Also glad to hear that your husband is feeling well enough to be out for a bit.
ReplyDeleteHi Sue - Hope all is well with you. With Sue over in Wales done with blogging and John at Going Gently taking a break, I'm starting to worry all my favourite bloggers will disappear!
ReplyDeleteI like writing too much to stop anytime soon!
DeleteI will miss Sue over in Wales, too. I hope she starts a new blog. I learned a lot from her writings. So glad Col is up and about. Life is good!!
DeleteMan up ladder - one of your happiest pictures yet!
ReplyDeleteLove the Green Man!
ReplyDeleteI'm going outside right now and take a photo of my gnomes and put them on my blog. Mine are cuties. :-) Good job on your woods! ((hugs)), Teresa :-)
ReplyDeleteI love that spring is arriving for you and that Col is wellenough to be cimbing.
ReplyDeleteGod bless.
Lovely to see Col up a ladder 😊
ReplyDeleteLiked the green man so much I ordered one too. On its way to the Netherlands he will be ;-)
