Yesterday..............................

......................at some time,  was the minute when day and night are of equal length...............The Spring Equinox.

I forgot.

So a day late............. Happy Ostara or Eostre......the name comes from a Saxon Spring Goddess..

Little is known about Eostre but according to my Country Wisdom and Folklore Diary...................

The story goes that Eostre found a wounded bird. To save it's life, she transformed it into a hare but even though the bird took the appearance of a hare it retained the ability to lay eggs. As thanks to the goddess the hare decorated the eggs and gave them as gifts to her.

When Christianity arrived Eostre became Easter and decorated eggs have been given as a gift for hundreds of years.

I prefer chocolate to hard-boiled!

Thank you for comments yesterday

Back Tomorrow

  1. Oh, lovely ... the 21st and the equinox! And our snow has gone. I know it caused chaos in the country, but I loved it! Happy Equinox to you, too, Sue!

  2. How interesting, I didn't know that , I wonder what the link is to the crucifixion and resurrection or is there none and just coinciding with the time of year. I do not like the commercialisation of Easter and the emphasis on not just chocolate eggs but hearing children saying " what did you get for Easter " or " can I have so and so for Easter " or here is a fiver instead of an Easter egg, suppose I am just a grumpy old woman, I like tradition and like to see children happy but seeing them surrounded by many chocolate eggs and nearly making themselves sick doesn't seem right, making decorative bonnets and hunting for a few in the garden is lovely!

    1. The hard boiled egg represented the stone being rolled away from Christ’s tomb.

  4. I prefer my eggs to be dark chocolate Sue because, as an adult, it’s my preferred choice. As a child, it was decorated hard boiled eggs and they had to be eaten after rolling!
We are forecast vey cold weather and maybe more snow so looks like the spring has been overtaken again. Love the photo.

  9. I never knew where the eggs fitted in. People have lost touch with the ways of the Earth. Spring is such a special time, full of hope for growing and harvest and food to survive another year.

  16. The header is very nice. But....at the same time the new header appeared my screen is halved. Half is yellow and the other half contains the blog with very tiny tiny letters..... whatever I do it jumps back to this dwarf blog

  19. I thought the egg reference stemmed from the stone being rolled from Jesus' burial cave as we had the custom of rolling our hard-boiled and painted eggs down a slope.
