......................at some time, was the minute when day and night are of equal length...............The Spring Equinox.
I forgot.
So a day late............. Happy Ostara or Eostre......the name comes from a Saxon Spring Goddess..
Little is known about Eostre but according to my Country Wisdom and Folklore Diary...................
The story goes that Eostre found a wounded bird. To save it's life, she transformed it into a hare but even though the bird took the appearance of a hare it retained the ability to lay eggs. As thanks to the goddess the hare decorated the eggs and gave them as gifts to her.
When Christianity arrived Eostre became Easter and decorated eggs have been given as a gift for hundreds of years.
I prefer chocolate to hard-boiled!
Thank you for comments yesterday

Oh, lovely ... the 21st and the equinox! And our snow has gone. I know it caused chaos in the country, but I loved it! Happy Equinox to you, too, Sue!

Thank you
DeleteHow interesting, I didn't know that , I wonder what the link is to the crucifixion and resurrection or is there none and just coinciding with the time of year. I do not like the commercialisation of Easter and the emphasis on not just chocolate eggs but hearing children saying " what did you get for Easter " or " can I have so and so for Easter " or here is a fiver instead of an Easter egg, suppose I am just a grumpy old woman, I like tradition and like to see children happy but seeing them surrounded by many chocolate eggs and nearly making themselves sick doesn't seem right, making decorative bonnets and hunting for a few in the garden is lovely!
ReplyDeleteThe hard boiled egg represented the stone being rolled away from Christ’s tomb.
DeleteThank you, something else I have learned today!
DeleteWell, its very Spring like here today, lots of sunshine thank goodness.

We have sunshine but still a very cold wind
DeleteI prefer my eggs to be dark chocolate Sue because, as an adult, it’s my preferred choice. As a child, it was decorated hard boiled eggs and they had to be eaten after rolling!
ReplyDeleteWe are forecast vey cold weather and maybe more snow so looks like the spring has been overtaken again. Love the photo.
Oh no - I really need things to warm up
DeleteHappy Equinox to you Sue, lovely top photo real springlike, wish my hens would start laying eggs again though!
ReplyDeleteWish I had hens!
DeleteI do hope the weather starts to become more Spring-like now. Lovely story. I remember decorating hard boiled eggs at primary school. X
ReplyDeleteStill cold here today but we have sunshine
DeleteI love your new header picture! -Jenn
ReplyDeletethank you
DeleteLove, love, love your new header photograph, Sue!!! It's really lovely, and so very 'you'!

Thought it was time for a change
DeleteI never knew where the eggs fitted in. People have lost touch with the ways of the Earth. Spring is such a special time, full of hope for growing and harvest and food to survive another year.
ReplyDeleteSeeds are coming up....there is hope!
DeleteSmashing header. I've never worked out how to do that! My friend bought me the Autumn version of your book for my birthday last year.
ReplyDeleteArilx
but you have got a header photo, so it's easy to change it.....go into Layout, then Header then edit and take out old photo put in new from where ever and click shrink to fit!
DeleteThis photo is my own not from where ever!
DeleteI went back and worked out how to do it yesterday!

Luckily (for my weight's sake) I have never really bothered about chocolate.
ReplyDeleteYou are very lucky at being able to avoid chocolate....I love the stuff!
DeleteLovely header, it definitely says "Spring" to me!
ReplyDeleteIt's a bit dark........ should have had more light on it, so may do it again when I have time
DeleteLike everyone else, I love the header. I hadn't realised about the day/night thing - it's taken me by surprise.

Thought it was time for a change of header.
DeleteI love your new header, very pretty. Your story is neat, too. I also prefer chocolate! ((hugs)), Teresa :-)
ReplyDeletethank you
DeleteI love the header!! I love when days get longer. Definitely spring here, about 10 degrees warmer than normal though, 63(17) today but a bit overcast.
ReplyDeleteStill cold and windy here but at least we have had sunshine
DeleteThe header is very nice. But....at the same time the new header appeared my screen is halved. Half is yellow and the other half contains the blog with very tiny tiny letters..... whatever I do it jumps back to this dwarf blog
ReplyDeleteOh dear, sorry about that problem - I cant explain it as I just swapped one picture for another so it shouldn't make a difference to the rest of the blog
DeleteHow interesting - I've always wondered why it was a rabbit delivering the eggs! :-)
ReplyDeleteI'd not heard that story before so I don't know where the diary compilers found it
DeleteI like the look of the spring book!
ReplyDeleteIt's full of writings - old and new about spring - I have the summer one too
DeleteI thought the egg reference stemmed from the stone being rolled from Jesus' burial cave as we had the custom of rolling our hard-boiled and painted eggs down a slope.
ReplyDeleteWhich came first.......the chicken or the egg.......that is the question! Pagan stories became Christianity
DeleteHappy Spring to you and I hope your weather warms up soon! That new header is beautiful and so Spring like. I love that gorgeous mug!
ReplyDeleteGreat post! Love the new picture heading. Happy Ostara. We had abundant sunshine yesterday but still really chilly. I can definitely tell the days are getting longer now (our clocks have changed already).
ReplyDeleteLovely header for your blog. I learn something new every time I visit.
ReplyDeleteGod bless.
Oh dear...I forgot too! x
