March Financial Outlook + New Neighbours

Last year in March, having just moved here we spent several thousand pounds.......... There was........... the removal company, a new lap top, a whole load of painting by the painter-man, a years council tax, a cupboard for the dining room, Col's 60th birthday bash, building insurance on the bungalow (later mostly refunded), The final electric bill for the bungalow, some wood cutting, a safety fireguard and cot for visiting grandson, the cat's flu jab and wormer drops, bits to repair the bathroom loo and the chimney sweep.......phew.

Thank goodness this year March won't be so expensive!

Last year we paid the council tax all in one lump because we weren't sure of our income, so thought we'd better pay it while we had the money, this year it will go back to 10 monthly payments. The vet has already sent a text message to remind us that Polly needs her booster jab but all the rest of that list above doesn't have to be spent out  on this month although we'll get the chimney swept during the summer.

We have family visiting mid month (hopefully) so I'll need to get in some extra food things. There will be car boot sales at which I MUST NOT SPEND TOO MUCH! normal food shopping and  we are due an electric bill. I'll need to get some bags of multi-purpose compost too. That's about it........she says in hope.
Being cut off by snow means spending so far this month = £0!

Looking back at the February finances........total outgoings including House Insurance, LPG cylinder, Diesel for both cars, 6 month water bill, food, bits, bobs and all the usual expenses was £797. I put off the Beach Hut ground rent until March.

We've met our new neighbours .........not a holiday cottage thank heavens, but a couple just a bit older than us so hopefully no loud parties! They've moved in late Wednesday in the worst of weather conditions only to find that the previous people have left them with hardly any heating oil, which is a bit mean. We said that surely old neighbours had had some delivered not many weeks ago and the new neighbours said that 500 litres had been delivered 4 weeks ago but it was almost gone - good grief................ I'm glad we have the wood-burner so we don't have to have the boiler going all day. We also discovered that because of the weather and us being cut off, only half their possessions had arrived as the second lorry couldn't get through late Wednesday afternoon. One of their cars full of stuff was stuck at the bottom of a hill 2 miles away, they had some food from their freezer, but no alcohol, no comfortable chairs and had run out of tea and milk!  At least we could give them tea bags, milk and the sun loungers - but we couldn't do much about the alcohol!

Have a good weekend.......stay warm and safe if you are in this countries snowy conditions............It started snowing again here yesterday afternoon - making it the worst snowy cold spell for 30+ years.

Back Monday
Sue

  1. My goodness, last March was so expensive. You'd have to work very hard to beat that, wouldn't you?
Good neighbours are a treasure. I'm glad your sound 'promising'.

    1. The snow is shrinking here today, people have visited our other neighbours so roads must be open in one direction

  3. I have my heating on all day, but not night, at the moment and the woodburner. Keeps the house ticking over and no freeze ups. Still, weather like this only comes once every ten years or so, if that, so will just have to put up with it. No change in the weather this morning and last night's snow has covered all the tracks and all look pristine and pure outside again. Hopefully I will get out later. And it is still windy!

  4. It's must be a relief to not have a holiday home so close. For ages we thought the bungalow next door was being done to be rented out, but the owner has had enough and put it up for sale, we have fingers crossed we get nice people in, we have a shared drive. Both cats have been to the vet this week, both health OK, but ouch, not cheap.

    1. Yes better to have permanent neighbours rather than people coming and going

  5. I'm glad the new neighbours are going to be just that, neighbours and not an ever changing stream of holiday makers.

    Stay warm this weekend. Xx

  6. I think the new neighbours should be mighty thankful they have you next door. What a bad time of year to try and move house.

  7. I bet you are glad it wasn't like this last year! Good to know that it is not going to become a holiday cottage. Perhaps they want that hot tub to warm their old bones!
We still have lots of snow in drifts but at least the road is passable now, with care. I hope yours will be soon.

    1. Yes, last year we were moving in and it was much better weather. Someone visited other neighbours so the road one way out is clear

  8. Have a wonderful March! It's nice to know that expenses won't be as much. I think I read in the side bar you had recently moved and that is always full of surprise expenses when that happens. Nice to visit your blog.

  9. Good neighbours are one of life's blessings. We are fortunate, one of my sons far less so and I really feel for him and his family.

    1. We've been lucky with close neighbours in most places and worst problems were with second-homes where people would come and have huge loud parties and then leave again.
We even get loud music here from across the fields when someone has visitors and they have parties outside

  10. Oh your poor neighbours. I'm sure they're thinking themselves very lucky living next to kind, generous neighbours like you.

  11. Kind of you to help your new neighbours. Google tells me 500 liters of heating oil is the minimum order a company will fulfill. So not being knowledgeable on this type of fuel what is a normal order amount and how long on average should it last?

Thinking of you and your journey to hospital. Will they see you on Sunday if weather is good?

    1. A tank holds about 1.400 litres. We had 1000 litres last May and still have some left but we only have heating on for a couple of hours 3 times a day as we have the wood burner. Old Neighbours had no other heat source and had heating on all day. New neighbours want a wood burner too

  13. I'm glad the new neighbors are not loud and obnoxious. Very kind of you to help them out during their difficult time. Hopefully the good will will come back to you thrice. Your weather sounds pretty dreadful. We are currently 46 deg. F and fairly dry. ((hugs)), Teresa :-)

  15. I'm sure your new neighbors are breathing a sigh of relief knowing that they have moved in next door to good neighbors. Hopefully you will have a better (financially) March this year than last year. We have very good neighbors and have been a great help to me with all the snow we have had. DH is unable to do any shoveling so it was up to me and we have a long driveway that has to be done. The sun is peaking out and we are hoping no more snow for a while.

  16. New neighbours sound OK and you have earned brownie points helping them settle in. That should stand you in good stead. +2 here and snow going at last.

  17. Your nasty weather has made the news here in Canada as well. Please stay safe and warm. Glad the new neighbours are okay.
