And something else to go into landfill.....aaargh
ReplyDeleteNo way in my garden. Is it possible to get a tasteful gnome?
ReplyDelete< shudder >
ReplyDeleteThanks for the tip-off, I'll go and get half a dozen. They'll look great, dotted around Owl Wood...
ReplyDeleteDoes that price tag really say £28? Who would spend that much on an ugly plastic figure? Not me!
ReplyDeleteWell, each to their own, I guess. Not for me....I prefer stone garden ornaments. My pet hate is those plastic swan or other animal garden planters - why would anyone want things planted in an (plastic or otherwise) animal's back?!
ReplyDeleteI have got a small one thats been in the Family for years!!.Hes been knocked over, blown over,in between cat fights, rained on,snowed on and had a slug living on him....and he still hasnt broke, lol.Mind you...I think if he did get broken,my Mam would glue him back together again!..Ive also got 3 hedgehogs,2 dogs and a squirrel that ive had for about 30 years. All a bit chipped but cant bring my self to throw them away, lol. My sister had about 10 of those Adsa type ones on her front lawn and someone nicked them! Debi,xx
ReplyDeleteI saw them in a local Asda last week - they are truly horrible, aren't they? And huge!! Who wants one of those in their garden. Still, if they had them last year and have got them again this year, presumably they sell well. Each to their own.
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't buy one, but they make me smile as a piece of kitsch. For some strange reason I simply had to visit the Gnome Sanctuary in Devon on holiday last year...still not sure why but we had a great time. Someone like Oscar Wilde said there's no good taste or bad taste just my taste and yours. They aren't mine. Arilx
ReplyDeleteYuk. My mum (who bless her, was a simple soul!) liked them and once bought one as a 13th birthday present for my cousin. I really DID try to talk her out of it but she wouldn't have it!
ReplyDeleteI don't have one nor do I have any intention of getting one, but apart from being made of plastic I don't know what's wrong with them. I never have understood this mass dislike for gnomes. They're a bit of fun to have in the garden and they remind me of Big Ears (Noddy). Each to their own!
ReplyDeleteJoan (Devon)
Not for me...but each to their own x
ReplyDeletePerhaps Asda have them again this year because they didn't sell well last year & so there are plenty left!!
ReplyDeleteAll ornaments & decorations are a matter of personal taste & that's what makes the world an interesting place.
A perfect example of plastic waste in the garden. We saw them last week when we popped into Asda, had a laugh, they do look amusing.
ReplyDeleteThey are so tacky I hate them, our Asda has hundreds in stock makes me cringe everytime I see them.
ReplyDeleteNo I don't buy them. BUT, friends gave us a few years ago a plastic cocker spaniel with a sign saying Welcome in its mouth. The wind has blown it around the garden and it has lost a bit of leg and shoulder. Now would you believe I am looking for a replacement?
ReplyDeleteMy son calls them heil hitler gnomes, look how they hold up their right hand, they are always selling out of them at Asda Stoke Park Sue. They have had Christmas versions for the past two years as well. Oh well each to their own.
ReplyDeleteShudders!! Never will anything like that enter my garden :-)
ReplyDeleteEeeewwww....no thank you. My mother used to love them but I find them a bit creepy.
ReplyDeleteHugs-x-
My seven year old grand daughter would love me to buy some for the garden. No way, but I have an awful feeling that grand dad will weaken. Those blue eyes do it everytime. Love Andie xxx
ReplyDeleteAlan spotted them for the first time the other day, I made a point of saying loudly and clearly how awful I think they are. It's my birthday in a few weeks .... I'm worried 😉
ReplyDeleteThose ain't gnomes, Sue, ha ha, they be Asda customers queueing at the checkout (as we say here in Deb'n!)
ReplyDeleteMargaret P (seriously, I don't speak with a Devonshire accent!)
One word. Hideous.

I love garden gnomes. Unfortunately I rarely see them on sale here. I have a couple hidden in under the rose bushes. One is years old and a bit green. They disappear under the clover in winter and pop out in the spring when it dries up. Wish I could buy a couple of these!!!
ReplyDeleteI was on a jury for the crime of stealing a garden gnome. (We didn't convict him!) Maybe we should have thanked him. Of course there is more to the story. The perpetrator also defaced a religious statue in the yard with nasty language and we got him on that count by comparing the odd letters in his handwriting.
ReplyDeleteNo thank you. I prefer the colour in my garden to come from my flowers. I do like "stone" or cement statues, though. We have one that looks like the Easter Island head tucked beside a shrub. -Jenn
ReplyDeleteOK, I am confessing, I like gnomes.
ReplyDeleteI remember in the 50s and 60s there was a house by my grandmothers that was a complete gnome land. My brother and I would go and lean over their gate and be fascinated by all the gnomes doing different things and they had houses and a little pond with a bridge with gnomes fishing. We loved it!! Not so much today! Of course there were no plastic ones back then so they weren't as tacky as today.
ReplyDeleteActually, garden gnomes have quite a history. I have the book, Garden Gnomes, A History by Twigs Way, published by Shire Books (I needed it for research for an article I was writing on gardens). These little people, found in gardens all across Britain, originated in Europe - we simply adopted them, or perhaps they entered the country illegally, ha ha! Seriously, they were welcomed by wealthy Britons "who saw them as the must-have garden accessory. However, "serious gardeners came to sneer at gnomes, but all was not lost, as they were to find a place in the heart of many a suburban gardener." They are like Marmite ... love 'em or hate 'em, but either way, they have an interesting history, too long to go into here.
ReplyDeleteTwigs Way says, "Northern Europe has a strong tradition in belief in 'little folk', with elves, leprechauns, dwarfs, *tomte* and other variants peopling the countryside. In Thuringia, the supposed birthland of the garden gnome, mythical red-jacketed dwarfs were said to recall actual miners, who arrived in prehistoric times from Crete. Whatever the size, origins, or nationality, the pointed red hat and tight jacket reflected the traditional uniforms of mine workers in the area."

Catching up on the rest of these comments....and remembered that i have a book on gnomes aswell!!.It is called,The Complete Book of the Gnome,All you will ever need or want to know.Author,Martin Cornwall pubished for the AA....Automobile Association 1997,lol....Why???,lol.Ive never even read it,it was chose in a 3 for £1 book sale in a charity shop years ago.Ive got visions now of my car breaking down, ringing the AA and the man turning up dressed as a gnome lol..Its 7 in the morning,Ive just spent the last half hour sorting this book out and Im now sat here with it in front of me thinking....I might read that today....Do you think that i might have too much time on my hands and really should get on with some house work instead, lol,Debi,xx
DeleteDebi (Anonymous) and Sue ... what a wonderful marketing ploy that would be, breakdown people dressed as gnomes! At least they'd be noticed, they could even have high visability pointy hats!

I really do think that this is a great idea Margaret P and as we came up with it between our selves...notice the word elves in that last word....I think that we should apply to go on the television on Dragons Den.We could ask for say..one million, just for a nice round figure cause all gnomes have nice round figures. Then we could clear off on a round the world trip...but first buy an Asda gnome...and send all the Dragons a photo of him from every country we visit.Maybe at Disneyland Florida or on the beach in Benidorm,etc...you get the idea?.But we wont tell anyone else cause we thought of it first.Best Wishes from your partner in crime, lol,Debi,xx
DeleteOh, that's made me really laugh out loud, Debi, the elves (i.e. gnomes) having "nice round figures" to match the million we could ask for on Dragon's Den! We could wear pointy hats in the Den, could we not? And hand similar ones to the Dragons! Oh, yes, sending pix to the Dragons from all corners of the globe (fancy a globe having 'corners'!)once we'd pocketed the million, and from all the tackiest holiday hot spots, Benidorm, etc. No, best keep this idea to ourselves, we wouldn't want anyone else getting in on the act! Maybe Sue and Col could join us though ...

A few years ago a house near us was sold, on the death of the owners, with the stipulation (in their wills) that the gnomes in the front garden should remain. On a main road, everyone knew the gnome house, (there were dozens, and a danger to gawping motorists!) and everyone waited to see what the new owners would do. Gradually, over a period of years, the gnomes reduced in number (accidents? end of their natural lives?) and then, one day, we passed and there were no gnomes left at all. As far as I know, the wrath of the previous owners has not fallen on the new occupants!
ReplyDeleteI don't have any of those but I have a couple of stone ornaments in my garden.
ReplyDeleteI admit to owning 2 or 3 garden gnomes but I have high standards on mine. They are concrete and classic and are very nice. I wouldn't have a cartoonish plastic gnome if you paid me. ((hugs)), Teresa :-)
ReplyDeleteI like certain gnomes (the ones that look more like they came from a fairy tale) but only in other peoples' gardens. All I have is a couple of stepping stones in mine :)
ReplyDeleteI have one in Norwich City colours (they are my boys) and hubby has one in West Ham colours. Unfortunately although we live Norfolk (Go Norwich City) one of our postmen is a West Ham fan, and when he calls my poor gnome always ends up kicked into touch!
ReplyDeleteI like that gnome on a ladder....oh wait, that’s Col! Good to see him about in the garden.
