Lush Jungle?..................



.............No, just  a greenhouse in Suffolk. I just keep watering and they just keep growing.

My best ever crop of aubergines after many years of trying. Why didn't they produce like this at the smallholding when I was growing to sell?
After making batches of Aubergine and Tomato sauce for pasta I think I'll be giving some away. I wonder what Col's brother.......a meat and potatoes traditional......... would do with an aubergine!

I bought an aubergine plant at the local village yard sale on Saturday for 50p.Ive never tried growing one before.It has 2 tiny aubergines on it.The lady whos stall it was recommended that I bought 2 or 3,but being the frugal person I am,lol.I just bought one.....now Im wishing that I had taken her advice!!.xx

  4. Aubergines can be slow and erratic to germinate. To deal with this I sow much more than I need but this year every single one germinated. I’ve got 12 plants in the greenhouse and have given lots away. I usually allow just 4 or so fruits per plant to develop so the second half of the summer I’m pinching out the (rather attractive) flowers.

    1. I've really only got room for 4 plants but have 6 squeezed in. The best year ever for flowers setting this year.

  5. They look fantastic, Aubergine is something I have never got quite right. A bit of a decent crop last year, but they stayed pretty small.

    1. There is a variety of mini aubergines and white ones which look odd but mine are just the normal and looking very good.
      I grew in the soil in the poly tunnel but in pots here, but its the best year for the flowers to set

  7. I'm struggling to keep my greenhouse watered, most of the big plants need a drink twice a day.

    1. Yes I'm doing the cucumbers and aubergines twice and the tomatoes and peppers get one big drink in the evening

  9. Your aubergines are our egg plants. I have not grown them in years as I always got more than I and my neighbors could eat. Your basil looks wonderful.

    1. I've two big pots of basil, I love it but then keep forgetting to use it! and a friend gave me some lemon basil but that's not so vigourous

    1. I've never used it for Moussaka, which is the traditional use but it makes a lovely pasta sauce or a layered pasta bake. It's quite a meaty vegetable

  11. Aubergines always remind me of Home Economics at school where we made Moussaka which seemed very exotic back then. Hope all is well with you. xx

  14. They look much nicer than the ones in Sainsbury's! We have Moussaka with aubergines and green lentils being vegetarian.

  15. Maybe something to do with the weather Sue. We tried to grow them in our greenhouse on the allotment but were never successful.

  16. They make a fantastic curry, baked whole in the oven, then scoop out the insides. There is a really good vegan aubergine curry on the come dine with me web site. All the meat eaters were impressed.
