Heritage Open Days Part 3 Plus Other Stuff

My final visit on Saturday was to Broomhill Lido on the way out of town.

I mentioned this back on the old blog, when we were living in Ipswich because I used to walk past it on my way to Broomhill library next door
This is the photo I took back in 2016 and how it looks most of the time, all closed up with many warnings.
The Lido was opened in 1938  and such a favourite place for Ipswich people for 50 years until it was closed in 1988 when it became too expensive to repair and keep open. Recently it's been awarded a heritage lottery grant and with much fund raising hopes to re-open.

This display shows photos and newspaper articles from the past

This is the main pool, covered in metal sheeting. Across the other side are what were the changing rooms. The far end was very deep and had 5 different level high diving boards.......One of very few pools to have these.

In front of the changing rooms were "sunbathing terraces"

Below is the shallow children's pool.

This display shows how it will look in the future

I bought a raffle ticket to hopefully win ( I didn't) a large print of this picture below

I do hope their plans go well so the pool can re-open, not because I will ever swim there but I remember the lovely times I had at Stowmarket open-air swimming pool in the late 1960s which was a miniature version of this pool. (Stowmarket pool also closed many years ago - late 70's  and has probably been built over by now! I shall have to have a look).

**********************************

Yesterday morning, much to my surprise, the bathroom guy turned up WITH the right metal trim for shower-board and  white grout for tiles, but WITHOUT wash basin. " They might bring it later" he said. Guess what........... They didn't! So he did what he could and off he went before noon. Wonder if he will be back today with the basin?

 And Finally
Does anyone else like watching Upstart Crow? I don't know why but I find it funny enough to smile at, which has to be a good thing the way the world is going...........or is it just me?
And I'm sure that sentence is written in Suffolk............ so completely in the wrong order.........as we do.

Back Tomorrow
Sue

  1. Yes, absolutely love Upstart Crow, best programme on TV at the moment. Hope the Lido gets restored and you get a wash basin, what is it with workmen.

  2. I miss Broomhill. I took my post down because I'd gone into tales from my childhood and shared all those memories & feelings but in hindsight decided it was too private to share.
We had almost identical pics, we stood in the exact same places though it would be hard not to with so much cordoned off. I've done a lot of googling and found so many pics of it without the scaffolding, showing green murky water, and even a few showing the deep end being cleaned! It was nice to see my old friend again, even if it was sad and bedraggled.

Your sentence made perfect sense to me, so it must be a Suffolk thing.

Hope the workmen turn up with the right basin and get it done today!!! x

    1. By the time they re-open it Violet will be just the right age for going there with friends.
We used to enjoy Stowmarket pool which was just like Broomhill but on a much smaller scale. I did a lot of my O level revising there in the summer of 1971. Well, supposedly revising!
Back then I was brave enough to swim underwater - can't do that now.

  3. I love Upstart Crow too - such clever writing and brilliant acting. And that sentence also made perfect sense to me. I live in Surrey, but my mother was from Suffolk :-)

  4. Made sense to me too and I'm not Suffolk.
I enjoy Upstart Crow - it makes me chuckle.

  5. I haven't seen upstart crow, I must remedy that. Hopefully the illusive wash basin with appropriate workman will turn up.

    1. I'm watching it on iplayer as I've been catching up on Wallender on Drama channel on Wednesday nights. I think Upstart crow is on it's 3rd series. Earlier ones are probably around on Utube if you do find it clever and funny.

  6. Made sense to me too and I've never set foot in Suffolk.

  7. I recently swam in the Art Deco swimming pool at Stonehaven in NE Scotland and was immediately catapulted back tonthe late 1950s. We went there to a boarding house for several years and the pool was where we spent most of our time. I found a picture of my brother and I on the sun terrace steps. Isn’t it wonderful that a group of people will hopefully do the same to the sad place used photographed. Hopefully, you’ll show us progress photos if you can.

    1. I hope they will let people see if the work progresses. They plan for 2020 or 2021 I think

  8. As a Norfolk person your Suffolk made perfect sense, in fact I cannot even see what you are talking about. We had an outdoor swimming pool in Norwich but it was closed many years ago. You will have to update your new header regularly as the crop grows; I have no doubt that the field has recently been drilled with something.

    1. Beccles pool is the only one left in Suffolk I think. I bet they had a good year this year.
I read the sentence twice and couldn't decide if it was right or not. Now I've read it again this morning it looks fine to me too!
I saw them harrowing and discing the field but didn't see them drilling, it was rape last year so I guess wheat. I shall go rummage and find out

  9. That is quite a magnificent lido with considerable renovation still to be done. There are several around here. Two have been successfully reopened and the one in the suburbs of Bath is still a working project!

    1. Good news about the pools in your part of the country and I'm glad more kids will have the chance of using an outdoor pool, the whole swimmiing experience is completely different.

  10. I enjoy Upstart Crow too. I love swimming in Lidos and have been visiting those close to home ( south west) and plan in retirement (soon)
to travel and discover more. Can put this one on the list when its restored. Like the new header photo. Sentence made sense to me but I'm someone who puts two lots of brackets in one sentence - evidence above!

  11. I *love* Upstart Crow! So clever and funny. My daughter went to one of the live recordings and really enjoyed seeing how it was made. People who've missed the earlier series can catch them on Netflix.

  12. I've never heard of Upstart Crow so I'll look that up.
    Love outdoor swimming pools.

  14. It will be so lovely to see the Lido restored and used again - sadly the very popular one in Scarborough on the North Bay didn't make it - they may even have filled it in now - so sad. I expect it is tricky to bring them up to today's building and health and safety standards. Any restoration needs a shed load of money - it is happeneing all around Britain different charities trying to preserve our heritage.
Not seen Upstart Crow - will look out for it - sounds popular.
    Like your Autumn picture header.

  15. They rebuilt the baths that i us to swim in the late 90s. I use to go in the baths to have a proper bath and wash my hair in the late 1990s we never had a proper bath until I went to live with my husband. I can remember how we use to sun bathe and then jump and swim, wonderful memories. Hazel c uk

  16. Hope they manage to re-open the Lido. When I was a lot younger we used to visit Ilkley Outdoor swimming pool. Two buses to get there. Tarlain at Macduff is hoping to re-open up here. Hope we both get a sink soon.
