September Library Book Photo + House News

Here are the books I collected from the Mobile Library this week. All except one are books I've ordered on line and collected. Once again most are crime fiction.

From the bottom upwards - Gather is a cookery book to browse. Gill Meller was one of the people who worked with Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall in the early days. The Handmade Apothecary is what it says on the spine! No idea where I got the idea for ordering the Book of Silence and also no idea what it's like yet. New crime by Ann Cleeves - it's her last in the Shetland series. A biography of Christmas - again  no idea. "Gallows Court" by Martin Edwards is the first in a new series by this author. I didn't like his Lake District Mystery series so not sure about this. I'll let you know. "Down Yonder at the Back End" is a small biography I took off the returned shelves on the van. "Crime on the Fens" by Joy Ellis a new to me author to try out. Another crime fiction by Ann Cleeves is a re-print from before she became well known with the Shetland and Vera books. Then another British Library Crime Classic reprint - The Arsenal Stadium Mystery by Leonard Gribble and the very slim volume on the top of the heap is Lucifer's House by Mel Starr, this is from a series of historical crime set in the 14C.
Which to read first, that is the question.

What did I read from last time? Below are the books picked up 4 weeks ago. They've all gone back to the library. The only one that went back completely un-read was the book by Peter James. I flicked through The New Spend Year but didn't bother to read it properly. The Life of Stuff isn't what I thought but  actually a memoir of the author, her mother and family and a type of depression that leads to extreme hoarding - an interesting read. All books I've read have been added to my Books Read 2018 page.
I've still got some non-fiction here from 8 weeks ago. I'm  preferring crime at the moment but I'll hang onto them a while longer just in case.

Meanwhile.................

The downstairs bathroom is finally done so now I need to get out the paint again. It looks as if someone did a quick coat of white over blue sometime before we came here and I'm also going to grout the few tiles that the kitchen man fixed on the wall beside the new units. I wonder why that little bit was never finished, given that the tiles were in the garage all the time. He'll be back in about a month, maybe less, to do the second part of the kitchen replacement which is two wall cupboards above two cupboards. That gives me a bit of a break from Workmen and hopefully a chance to get out to some church visits etc.

Thanks for comments yesterday

Back Tomorrow
Sue

    1. I hope to get the bathroom done quickly as it's not very big, just a bit awkward to do around everything

  3. The book of silence I found excellent and inspiring; it was written while the author stayed around here.
Many thanks for the dyeing book, am looking forward to reading it over the weekend - your kindness is appreciated :)

    1. I seem to have been stuck here with workmen coming and going for weeks so will be good to get out and about

  5. Glad your bathroom is finally done. A relief, I am sure. As for painting a bathroom, I think because they are often small we think it will be easy, but as you note, it is actually incredibly fiddly work having to go around so many objects. Much easier to paint four flat walls in a larger room with fewer interruptions. Good luck.

  6. I was interested that you had the last Shetland series book by Ann Cleeves-its is not out here yet. Our library book club is reading Cold Earth for our October meeting. I have also been watching the dramatization of some of her books on Netflix. I enjoy her books. Jean/Winnipeg

    1. I wonder why she has decided that this will be the last Shetland, perhaps I shall find out when I read it.

  7. Always appreciate book recommendations. We just borrowed from the library the DVD series Garrow's Law & we are quite enjoying it (BBC production/Acorn) I wonder if the book is based on some of the real life Garrow cases?

    1. Oh I had completely forgotten about that series - it was so good. I think it did say it was based on fact if I remember correctly. Research needed.

  8. Its so nice to find someone who reads as much as I do and keeps a list. I started keeping list back in 2014. Its great to refer back to the list as sometimes I've forgotten what I've read. My son always kids me because the library call almost every night with a recorded message that the books I've ordered are in. I drive to the library every Saturday morning library to pick up my selections. Thanks for your recommendations.

  9. I really like Ann Cleeves writing. She does a bang up job of this genre. I must see if we have that book available at our library.

    God bless.

  10. I only read the Shetland books after watching the tv series. Usually it's the other way around. They are quite different than the tv show, but I loved them so much and am sad this latest is the end.

  12. Some good reading there. I am on the last 100 pages of Barbara Erskine's Kingdom of Shadows, which I hadn't read for many years but haven't been able to put down. I love her novels. In fact, I have just been a Naughty Girl and bought her new book on Amazon (not going to pay full price for it in Booth's in Hay, that's for certain). It's called the Ghost Tree.

I wonder which book you will choose to read first? I'll say. . . . one of the Ann Cleeves novels, perhaps the new one "Wild Fire".

  14. I’ve just read The Life of Stuff by Susannah Walker almost in one sitting. It’s a riveting account of the author’s attempts to discover who her mother really was while clearing her house after her death. Very informative for anyone wishing to learn more about the condition known loosely as “hoarding.”

  15. I enjoy seeing what you are reading. I'm a fan of crime fiction also, and I check my library to see if it has available the ones that you show us. Thank you very much.
