Found a Post with Interesting Comments

A few days ago I was looking back to see what I'd written for the November 1st folklore post last year and found this that I'd forgotten about.

I just loved re-reading all the comments it stirred up .......................

So here is my post from November 10th 2017 and all the interesting comments that followed.

"In Time For Christmas"?

Are you ordering a new sofa or dining table now so that it can be delivered "In time for Christmas"?
No? neither am I!
So who does? someone must, otherwise they wouldn't use that as a tag line for their ads. Christmas is the most expensive time of year for most people but there must be folk who are adding to their debt by buying a sofa on credit.
Ho Hum.

  1. Hello. There can be some great sales during this time of year. And, if you need a big ticket item there are many sales offering zero percent interest. But, of course the person needs to be diligent to pay off the balance in full before the expiration date of the offer. I'm always on the lookout for a great deal if I need something. I recently did a post about saving money. Have a great day! Pat

    1. Yes you are right. 0% interest is good for some people

  2. That seems an unusually mean spirited post from you. Some people plan for big ticket items. If I needed a new sofa and had company coming over Christmas, it would be important to me to know whether delivery was Dec 23 or Jan 4.

Hope all is well with you.

    1. Yes thank you I am fine and always forget that people take everything so seriously on a blog!

    2. Agree on the mean spirited bit. Not everyone will be 'adding to their debt by buying a sofa on credit' - some people budget for new furniture or save up for it. Very judgy post, don't like the undertone.

    3. Ah, but you see I am mean spirited, judgemental, nasty, cruel and generally not a nice person. So there! and I didn't say everyone anyway.

    4. Thank you Louise :-)
I also forgot to say that I'm extremely childish and tend not to take myself very seriously!

    5. Oh, I have just read this thread, as I agree with you that makes me mean spirited etc etc Lord Love a Duck surely those adverts get up everyone's nose. There that's me being judgemental. If i bought new furniture because friends and family were coming they would think I had lost my marbles.

    6. Yay Sue! Mean spirited? You? It's not April 1st, is it? You are the least mean-spirited person in blog land, dear girl!
I'm with you on those adverts. What they are trying to do is make us appraise our current furniture and make us think it's just not up to it! They want us to shell out mega bucks on new items for all our relliss and friends, their children and dogs, plus Uncle Tom Cobley and all, to come and scramble all over brand new ones which have been delivered in time for Christmas, of course; to spill wine over them and crunch crisps into them, smear them with mince pies and dips, and make a real mess of our brand new furniture! Yes, those adverts get right up my nose, too. But since I have control of the remote most of the time, if we're watching ITV or Channel 4, I hit the MUTE as soon as adverts come on. They are sooooo irritating! But they needn't be. I use advert time to make tea, visit the loo, put out our glasses of night-time water, etc. We can use advertising time profitably in this way, i.e. taking no notice of them and doing something other than watching them, ha ha!

  3. Errr no I am not in need of a new sofa...but hopefully today we complete on the house, and I have a verrry swish cooker coming...and some carpet....and we're looking at front doors...however I am working extremely hard in order to pay for these items! x

    1. Brilliant news on the house, hope the cooker arrives in time for Christmas! :-)

  4. It's all a sales trick, tell people anything is limited, so they don't have time to think about it, and someone will react and buy, even on big priced items.

  6. We needed a sofa delivered "by Christmas" when we first got married and moved into an Army Quarter and opted for unfurnished thinking we could pop into a furniture store, choose a sofa and have it delivered the next day! How naive were we?! Spent Christmas sitting on cushions on the floor - thank goodness we had chosen to spend our first married Christmas alone! Could have been embarrassing.

  8. I think people like to decorate for the holidays and often have more visitors during this time of year. My SIL renovates homes with kitchens and bathrooms being his specialty, and his busiest times are from September to December. I don’t need a couch, but do need to buy a new mattress for guests staying over. I have been hearing complaints about the one I have.

  9. Oh dear Sue, you seem to have stirred a hornets nest. I have to state that I am in the same mind as you. IF I did need a new sofa or other large furniture item I would be keeping my eye on the sales, lots of them start on boxing day. BUT I wouldn't want it for Christmas, chocolatey fingers, warm mince pies oozing brandy butter, flaky pastry off hot sausage rolls. I don't think so.

I would be worried that if I got rid of an old sofa the new one wouldn't turn up in time! Not that we buy new if we can avoid it anyway!

  10. I totally agree with you Sue. I would hate the fuss of trying to make up my mind about furniture just before Christmas. My grand children prefer sitting under the table anyway but that's another story and as light hearted a comment as I think yours was meant to be. Sue

  11. If I was buying a new sofa I would do so AFTER Christmas when it was less likely to get spoiled. I never understand the 'get it I. Time for Christmas' push for anything. There is quite enough to do at this time of year and I would rather shop at a more relaxed time. It's not as if the "sale" only occurs at Christmas as time. From the adverts I see, it seems they are on all year round.

  12. Nope, no new furniture for Christmas. Trying to hold off on any new furniture while we still have the cat.

  14. Actually I do want to buy a wing chair, but that Xmas tag is putting me off to after the holiday, when there is the interminable 'sales' items, especially Oak Furniture.
What puzzles me, if hundreds ordered sofas to arrive on due date, how do they make them all?

  15. We had new sofas last year, delivered mid Dec - BUT we'd been looking for some we liked the look of/ were the right size/ the right colour/ were comfortable for over a year - so the timing was just a coincidence - a happy one, for us :)
Other than that (and the one time we moved house at the very end of Oct and desperately wanted anew sofa bed (for our new (as in never had before) second living room and also had guests staying over Xmas (so the sofa bed would be very handy!) we struggled to get a delivery before Xmas - they offered us one half day (morning) slot in late Nov and that was it. As my husband was working away and I was working in a school and they refused to tie it down to a smaller window/ contact me when close to our house (the school being less than a mile from our home) we were stumped! The 'guaranteed delivery before Xmas' clearly meant only this 4.5 hour period several weeks before Xmas day was our only chance..... ridiculous! :D

  16. We need a new sofa - so we have decided to give ours a "holiday rest" and elected to go and sit on someone else's for Christmas!

  17. My 'new' sofa arrived on Saturday - in the back of my car. It was new to me, but several years old, immaculate and carefully looked after by an elderly lady who was down-sizing from her beautiful apartment overlooking the north coast of Cornwall. She had made beautiful fitted covers for it - and it cost me all of £30. I collected it with my daughter-in-law to help lift it into the back of my car, so no worries about it being delivered.
I look at those repetitive adverts and laugh!

     **************************************************************************

    What fun that was!

Haven't actually noticed any of those "buy now for pre-Christmas delivery " ads so far this season.............but there's still time.

After 5 years blogging I'm still constantly being surprised at how serious some folk are about blogging and commenting. Every blogger is an individual and it is the right of an individual to write what they want and if something written offends, well, it's just words........... delete or don't read. Sadly  I'm so naive that I can never understand how nasty some commenters can be to people they don't know and how offended people get. I was always told by my mum "sticks and stones will break my bones but nasty words can't hurt me". There seems to have been a spate of nastiness just in the last week, it's all so unnecessary............. forcing people to stop blogging or apologise for something written that someone has misunderstood. (I've usually missed the whatever or whoever it was that caused the problem in the first place as I only go on line first thing and then stop looking at the computer screen after 8pm every night. So only get the tail end and never know why someone says they are stopping blogging!) I'm not sure what someone could say to me in a comment to make me stop blogging, I don't plan to find out!

Anyway I will carry on thinking that on the whole people are nice rather than bad and if that makes me naive then I'm glad. I'll carry on  writing what I want, aim at being light-hearted, try not to be nasty and I do hope I'm not still mean spirited!!

Hope everyone has  a lovely weekend.
    Remember to be kind

    Back Monday

  1. I don't think I read all those comments last year, although I do remember your post. I think if you write a blog and open it to everyone, then you have to accept that not everyone will agree with your views, but I'm appalled at the spiteful comments that some people leave. Unfortunately it's somehow easier to be nasty online - I've witnessed this with a couple of real-life friends who will write things online that they would never say to your face. I hope you don't stop blogging Sue, I enjoy your posts.

  2. No wonder I have always been a tad careful about commenting! ;) I think we should spoof every now and then, life is not always serious and neither is blogging!
This is true, I have only ever bought one NEW sofa in my life, the rest inherited along the way. Obviously I am not a style person...

  3. Good Morning Sue

Well... that was a mixture of comments! Pleased that you have continued to blog and take the 'rough with the smooth'. Do people say what they think or don't think what they say?

    Keep on blogging!

    Have a good weekend.

  4. Still not buying anything new for Christmas, thanks for reposting, interesting reading all the comments. A few blogs I read have trolls making nasties comments, how rude, some people have lost the art of keeping quiet, when they don't agree.

  5. I like to think that people are good with a few bad apples. I am always shocked when I read rude, mean or just spiteful comments on blogs. I don't go on forums online as I have been told that is where the real nasties lurk, with all the vile comments. I think life is hard enough for some, don't add to it with horrid responses.

  6. I stopped letting comments publish automatically after "anonymous" kept putting really nasty remarks after every post for a week or so. It does feel sometimes that people can get over-sensitive and snap back with a response because a nerve has been (unintentionally) touched. I'm OK with a comment which offers a different perspective, provided it is written politely. But like you, Sue, I'm happy to continue taking potshots at companies which try to manipulate Joe and Jill Public into buying products unnecessarily. Christmas is about love, joy and peace, not getting buying, eating and accumulating debt.

  8. Hulabaloo about nothing, as usual. Moderation is the way to go. Bloggers have two choices, in one ear and out the other, or, explode. A good rant sometimes gets rid of the frustration :o)

  10. I do get amused at what 'offends' some people. Maybe they don't actually have much interaction with real people so forget how have a conversation where it's ok to disagree with each other without being nasty.

I bought a carpet recently and they had big signs up about ordering in time for Christmas. It amused me that they thought people would just randomly buy a carpet!

  11. I'm not even buying new gifts for Christmas, let alone a sofa. I did get one in December a few years ago, but it wasn't 'for Christmas', it was because we'd finally saved enough money, and got a good deal on what we wanted.
I stopped blogging recently because I just couldn't be bothered with it anymore. Strangely enough, since I stopped I've had loads of things to blog about. Blogging has definitely changed in the 7+ years since I started; there seems to be far more nastiness than there used to be, and double standards are rife!

  12. That's me! I always miss the post that has been deleted for some adverse comment. This year I have had a bad year. Christmas is from the internet. Mostly just for the grandchildren's birthday's three first three weeks of January (more choice) but saying that, they have an Advent Bag with twenty-four gifts and clothes on Christmas day, mainly unread books from the charity shop (I will blogging about this topic soon) collected throughout the year. One family of three older children (twins born in July won't need presents this year - sounds mean I know) have eight presents eight. First child opens on 1st December then again 4th December, second on 2nd and 5th and so forth. Their cousin gets all twenty-four this year but if she gets a brother or sister she will have to share. I have purchased gifts for few people who have helped my this year from driving me (I don't drive) to doing washing (my washing broke at height of my problems and shopping, and that is it for Christmas I have had other things on my mind.

I see you too have the mystery gmail sign-up leaving a comment, don't know who or what it is but it gets deleted off of my comments immediately!

  13. Bloggers like yourself, Ilona etc. are brave souls these days but I thank you for not letting nasty comments stop you from posting.
I have no problem with folks wanting their homes to look nice or for people to take advantage of sales - what I do object to (and what I think you were getting at) is that ads like this take away from the true meaning of Christmas. Instead of celebrating the Christmas story with friends and family people are inundated with ads telling them that they MUST have this latest toy - or their homes MUST have new furniture in order to be worthy of company - and the food offered MUST be of the highest quality and come in vast amounts! It starts early and goes on and on and it takes a very strong person indeed not to feel the pressure.
I enjoy Christmas so much more now that my nieces & nephews are grown and my friends and I have all decided to limit any small gifts to consumables - preferably HM - the only exceptions are books as we are all fanatical readers! We concentrate on getting together, sometimes at a nice restaurant but also at each others homes. A simple meal, a nice bottle of wine (or cup of tea) with perhaps a board game or puzzle to enjoy is just fine. And no I am not in my dotage as yet - I just find it so much more fun not to be out in the crowds or to feel the tremendous pressure to buy! I can enjoy seeing all the light displays around town, I can go to a Christmas concert or two or I can enjoy a snowy walk in the park and not worry about those January bills.

  14. I think sometimes people post comments in haste. It's best just to take a deep breath and come back to something if you don't agree with it. Or perhaps just don't comment at all lol. My Mum always taught me that if you can't say something nice, don't say nothing at all.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I must be mean spirited to. So many people use Christmas as a point when they need to decorate, change furniture or out shine their neighbours. I'm not into playing those games. We bought out last 2 sofas over 16 years ago and recently dumped one and gave the other away. I certainly wouldn't get into debt for any one or thing.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Before Christmas some people seem to go into a kind of collective panic about having everything ready and perfect in time for the 'big day', and I think the big retailers can play on this state of mind.
I always try to be polite when commenting on blogs, because, as bloggers, we're all sharing our inner selves to some degree, and that can make us vulnerable. We're trusting others. I think it's important to remember that.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Ahh, the joys of blogging. Really the only nasty things I get are spam replies, perhaps that is a good thing.

You go girl, you were only voicing your opinion and that is something all are entitled to do.

    God bless.

    ReplyDelete
  18. You are entitled to your opinion Sue and as I said in my comment last year it's one I agree with.
I think the key is to remember that everyone else is entitled to their opinion too but not entitled to be rude, thoughtless or aggressive in their reply to other peoples' comments.
My father had a wonderful phrase when words became heated,”Shall we agree to disagree?”.
As a follow up to last year's discussion, I have decided to wait until after Christmas to buy a new carpet for our living room to save it from stains over Christmas! That probably makes me even more mean spirited though I’d call it practical.

  19. If it's any consolation, I agree with you. Just before Wimbledon or a big series of rugby or football matches, there are stores imploring people to change their old tv for a much bigger/better/all singing/dancing one in time to watch the matches.

This is just your (my) opinion. Everyone is different, but the ones who disagree don't have to get on their high horse about it just because they think that THEY are right and YOU (ME) are wrong. Daft old biddies. Best just ignored as they are the ones with the attitude problem after all . . .

  21. I don't write a blog myself, but whenever I read a blog my first thought is: "Their blog, their say." If I find I don't like the trend of the writing over time, I simply move on. I don't leave negative comments. I guess I am surprised that anyone who has read your blog for any length of time would fail to miss your sense of humour or, as you pointed out in that particular post, the zaniness of advertising messages at various times of the year.

  23. Our programmes here in Lancashire are full of adverts to get a new sofa before Xmas! Need to go and buy a new washer tomorrow. My door wouldn't open this morning but no point having it repaired as it is at least 17 years old. Think I have done very well!

  24. One of the unanticipated outcomes of not having either cable or satellite dish (I am in the US) is I'm not seeing commercials! I really don't miss the car dealer commercials - if I had to hear about Dealin' Doug one more time I think I would have lost it and thrown something at the TV. The commercials this time of year, both in print and on TV, are all geared towards Christmas and spending, spending, spending. It is rather nice to not see or hear them. Another thing is that this year the mid-term election (held in the two years between the Presidential election) is especially contested and down right volatile. I really detest all the negative ads that we have here. I can't get away from them though - my mailbox is full each day with campaign ads. Again and again. What a waste of trees and paper. Anyway Sue - I love your blog and read it several times a week. Mary
