Looking for Butterflies

July...........was the month the butterflies arrived. There are  loads of Peacock butterflies on the Buddleia and I've rescued one a couple of times from inside the garage.

I'm not surprised the Peacocks are loving the Buddleia as it's huge this year...2 years after Colin planted it and is giving off such a strong sweet cloying scent.

Gatekeeper on Hogweed ( which for some reason we always called Cow-mumble)
Until I loaded this onto the blog and enlarged it I thought this was just a large white on a Yarrow plant,  but not sure now, with veins on the under-wings showing up really well. I looked in my book and it could be a Green-veined White which is very common, although the under-wing should be yellower.
Large white on Knapweed

And I thought the Painted Ladies that were around earlier in the year had all disappeared until I spotted this on the drive-way, sheltering from the wind

There are also several Red Admirals about but I haven't been able to get them to sit still yet. They love to feed on fallen plums so maybe I'll get a photo later in the year.

Much wandering around and standing very still waiting to get these photos but I'm pleased it paid off in the end.

Back Tomorrow
Sue

  3. Lots of butterflies here, and no buddleia. It is a weed on the railways but such a pleasant weed. Lovely morning. I shall do nothing.

  4. As I have a large pond I have had a flurry of damsel flies around the garden along with the butterflies. You have done well to get photos I have chased them around but failed to get any good photos.

  5. I am sure we have seen more butterflies this summer, we often watch them fluttering around our garden, I am sure we have more small birds as well, I thing our neighbours overgrown garden helps for nesting, it's like a jungle next door with the hedges at tree height.

  9. I haven't managed to take any photos of the ones in my garden yet. I'm sure they have some special way of communicating.' Psst, she's coming to take pics, let's all make it impossible and flutter about at top speed!'
That Green Veined one is beautiful.

  11. I've also never seen a Green Veined White, it looks so different. You must be very patient as we tried taking photos of butterflies a few years ago, but nothing as good as yours. Helen S.

  14. What a beautiful collection of butterflies. I'm very impressed you know what kinds they all are. We get monarchs and swallowtails here. Other ones, I'm not sure about. -Jenn

  15. We have had dozens, hundreds even, of the painted ladies butterfly arrive this week - clouds of them - and yes they love our neighbour's budd. Hector (one of my cats), loves sitting on the windowsill and taking swipes at them..

So glad to see you mention Cow Mumble. That's what I was brought up to call it but I've had to give up as nobody else seems to know what I'm talking about!

  18. Lovely butterfly pics, not many here lately as new deck being built and a power tools are noisy.
When I first bought my house my favourite thing was to be out in the early Spring morning dead heading the Buddleia and enjoying a morning cuppa, that kept it flowering for months.Mine were dark pink and the scent was like red cordial.

  19. I love your butterfly pictures. I have so much trouble getting a decent butterfly picture.

There really have not been very many butterflies around this year. I do hope it is just an anomaly.

    God bless.
