30th January

Thank you to everyone for comments this week so far, especially about 'stuff' in the cupboards. If I didn't have room for all my possessions to be tidy then it would be time to move more out, but at the moment everything fits in, is used and tidy enough to find. I can't see any point in clearing out things that are used now and again because as sure as anything the moment I got rid would  the day before I needed it!
So the clearing out will slow down to just books.............oh and maybe the tea towels (a post to follow sometime!) My sister and I (mainly sister as she was closer) cleared out Dad's house after his death and he hadn't chucked anything out for years- there was an awful lot of junk, don't want to leave my lot with too big a job - even if it is  hopefully a long time in the future.

There was no swimming again this week. The pool has had to put in some sort of temporary boiler as parts for their old one are having to be made from scratch. That short power surge in early January certainly did a lot of damage.

I went for the free NHS 5 year health check and the nurse asked about exercise - and of course I hadn't swum due to the above, I hadn't walked due to my walking shoes being repaired, I hadn't cycled because the weather has been too wet and hadn't gardened for the same reason! Making me sound totally lazy - oh dear. (I've now got my walking shoes back - so no excuses - except for the weather)

But, just a little bit of proper sunshine on Monday enticed me out for half an hour to start the job of cutting back all the dead stuff from the quarter circle garden out the back of the house. I often think my gardening mojo has disappeared but it always comes back with fine weather. Although the fine day on Wednesday was accompanied by a freezing strong wind which put me off.

Took Polly to the vets again because once again she is constantly cleaning herself and losing hair. We agreed that there was no point giving her another steroid injection. Instead I've sent for  one of those plug in cat-calming things and I'm going to shut the cat flap at night so the mystery cat can't come in and Polly will have to use a litter tray (UGH) night time. ( I know all about microchip cat-flaps but it would be difficult to change it on the door, plus finding someone to do odd jobs is difficult).

I couldn't believe what I found after getting my shoes back and doing my first walk  down the field and back up the lane - someone has cut down the branch of the old apple tree that had the mistletoe on it.  I thought the wind had broken the branch but No it's been sawn through and is laying on the ground under the tree

WHY? and WHO? is what I want to know.

I'm a bit cross, but nothing I can do about it.

Back Tomorrow
Sue

  1. Oh, no - who on earth would want to do that! Vandal! (maybe).

I think getting outdoor exercise in the winter month is very daunting. It it's not wet, it's cold and if it's not cold it's windy - and sometimes all three. I think the hibernation instinct is strong in us and curling up in the warm with a good book is so much more appealing than it is in the lighter, brighter months.

  3. Was the branch overhanging the lane or dangerous? It’s a shame to be cut down unnecessarily.
I’m afraid I’m getting very unfit. In the past I had a personal trainer who came to the house once a week and I would go to the gym. I was a member of a women’s walking group but gave up when I had my knee replacements. Now fully recovered but not doing anything. On Tuesday evening after the theatre we had to walk uphill for a short distance to the car and I got quite breathless. Still Malvern is hilly! I hope dear Polly improves

    1. The mistletoe wasn't in the way and on an old tree well away from the road. Just so annoying

  4. What always used to get me annoyed was people trampling down mushrooms. Probably thinking all mushrooms are poisonous and therefore need to be destroyed, probably a bit like your mistletoe destroyer.

    1. It's just so odd as the tree is on a wide grassy verge - not in the way and not really belonging to anyone

  5. A shame about the mistletoe and as someone would have had to take loppers or a saw to cut through the branch, a deliberate act. How tall is the tree? Would a ladder be needed as well?

I agree, if you have space and are in two minds about something, keep it until you're absolutely positive one way or the other. This is something I do now whether I have space or not after having got rid of things without thought and regretted my decision when it's too late.

Outside exercise stops for me when it's raining or windy. I could do more inside, but have never been one for exercising just for the sake of it. I also get very tired (fatigue), easily and quickly, so sometimes it seems like a lot of effort for very little reward. My own worst enemy I suppose.

    1. The mistletoe was low enough and had been cut with a saw.

  6. That's upsetting about the mistletoe, especially if it was unnecessary. I am very unfit and need to ease myself back into regular exercise. I was walking for a 30 minutes every day but stopped when I hurt my knee for the umpteenth time. It's okay now though so I don't have any excuses and must get back to being more active but I have good intentions until I realise that it's cold or wet or icy, and then those good intentions fly out of the window!

    1. Totally unnecessary to cut it down - I don't understand at all.
Weather too nasty for getting out and about today

  7. So sorry somebody cut your apple tree, a very mindless thing to do.
The interesting NHS sounds a good thing to have.
Sorry Polly is having trouble and she will be find soon.
The sky seems to be looking as thou it's going to snow.

  8. Oh Sue - I know just how you feel about that mistletoe bough - similar thing happened to me once - people are quite mindless sometimes.

    1. Just don't understand who would have noticed it and cut it down - it wasn't doing any harm

  9. Darn, that is disappointing and frustrating. If there are any berries left on it perhaps you could find another host tree for it? Not sure how long it would take to show a decent 'crop' though!

  10. It always seems when one thing goes wrong so do lots of others. Perhaps you didn't lay not exercising on thick enough - you might have been prescribed free gym membership.

  11. It was cut, not down in a storm? That is sad indeed. I hate that exercising question!

  12. I hope Polly gets to doing better. If you've had a strange cat coming in that could certainly get Polly upset. Cats are very territorial animals and another one coming in would be a threat to all she knew.

How awful that someone cut that limb. Do you think they were after the mistletoe? It was very rude and inconsiderate.

  13. As an only child, I had to clean out my 2 story family home. It was hell.

I de-clutter, because I don't want our 3, to have the same issues. And they know, they do not have to keep _anything_ of mine, unless they want to. My husband is a 'keeper', and they know it. So that part, is not up to me. :-)

    Just cut it down.... Weird....

  14. Oh dear, I know you were looking forward to harvesting mistletoe later.

    God bless.

  15. Oh no... what rotter has sawn off that branch.
I know a lot of older people who are clearing out their own homes after having to sort out when an older relative has passed away and kept everything in sight just in case it might be used one day. Unlike the youth of today who can pack all their stuff in a suitcase.

  16. We had a whole tree cut down in our wood one time and no one saw anything or heard anything. It was Birch and the general opinion was that someone wanted it for wood turning rather than burning. The police were amazed I knew every tree in our wood but it was such an obviously freshly cut stump left!
