Thank you to everyone for comments yesterday.
Not much to mention in my Saturday round-up this week although it's been good to see all 3 of the Suffolk Grandchildren including looking after Youngest Grandson (17 months old now) while DiL took youngest granddaughter to her swimming lesson. I started singing the "I'm a little tea-pot" rhyme which we were looking at in a book and for some reason he found my singing hilarious. Humpty Dumpty was just as funny......I've no idea why!
I would love to tell you about the fun I had at 3 am on Tuesday morning when the LOUD bleeping from the smoke alarm told me that the battery was low, and after climbing the step stool ladder and finding it was mains operated.........something I've never dealt with before....... Then I'd love to tell you how I sat in the altogether googling "how to open and change back up battery in mains operated smoke alarm"...... Only to find I would need to go outside to the garage and turn off the relevant fuse! I would like to tell you how I tried to sleep with a pillow over my head until daylight so I could do the above. I would love to tell you all this but you would probably fall about laughing!😀
- Speedy delivery of a builders bag full of topsoil for the veg. beds which I shall spend weeks barrowing from the front round the back sometime between now and the spring.
- Sorting out the smoke alarm......eventually
Have a good weekend. Weather forecast is a bit iffy for car boot sales.I'm not sure what I'm doing - maybe a church visit or maybe nothing much at all.
Apologies if I started a run on masks! But I do read your blog for a dose of cheerfulness as well - I enjoy your boot sale successes too. Today has started very early thanks to 5am thunderstorm with plenty of rain; the gamble on not watering the garden yesterday paid off this time.

DeleteI love the randomness of blog comments (as long as they are not unpleasant) I had a similar issue with a smoke alarm last summer, fortunately not at 3am. I taught "Sing a song of sixpence" to my granddaughter, last month (I was surprised she didn't know it) and told her that when I was a child I called it the Toffernose Song. Rosie then went into school and asked if they could sing the Toffernose Song, which confused everyone. Are we losing the trad nursery rhymes? I hope not!

DeleteI agree smoke alarms always go of at the wrong time when mine went of I had only been in my new house a couple of weeks and I was told on no account to stand on a stool or chair (just had the stroke) and to ask the neughbour who I did not know she was so kind -a god way of getting to know her).
ReplyDeleteI loved singing I AM A LITTLE TEA POT with my grandchildren and I use to sing it to the children at school when I help out - that seems a longtime ago now.
I thought we might have got rain last night for it was very humid but the sky it dark at the moment so guess its coming.

DeleteWe are still awaiting the visit of the local Fire Brigade who signed us up for a home check recently when Danny and I were at the Elan Valley visitor centre. "Next week" he said - a month ago! What a palaver to try and sort it out though and I don't blame you for not going to change the fuse - even under cover of darkness! Ours works very well - every time we make toast in fact :)

There's another mains smoke alarm fitted into the garage (where the boiler is) not sure how loud that will be when the back up battery fails
DeleteOurs is battery operated and without fail, chirps low battery at night. So loud and so annoying. Must have been very difficult to ignore.

That's exactly what I always wonder! Also, why mine were all fixed in positions I can't reach, so that I have to ask someone else to do it? When one starts beeping, it's like the Chinese water torture.

DeleteOur mains powered smoke alarm used to beep loudly too when the back up battery was low. The problem was not so much finding a replacement battery but trying to get the cover off the wretched device. It always refused to come undone. So frustrating.
ReplyDeleteI hadn't a clue. It involves pushing a clip on the side with a screwdriver then sliding the cover off - who knew!
Deletelol i work in a call centre, you wouldn't believe the number of times I can hear people's smoke alarms giving random beeps in the background because the batteries are low! and if I mention it they nearly always say they are so used to it they dont notice anymore.

DeleteOh the joys of moving house and even months later discovering there are systems you haven't examined, manuals that weren't left behind, no explanation given for the quirks in the pump shed... or whatever. I love your blogs for your projection of competence, curiosity, a kind of contentment - for making fun out frustrations. And my goodness you work hard - barrowing topsoil?? Is there no such thing as boy scouts any more? They'd have made short work of that for you.

No laughing here Sue - mine is mains too - so just hope it doesn't start bleeping.
ReplyDeleteLuckily the fuse box switches are all labelled so I knew which to turn off, then it was a case of finding out how to remove the cover- also lucky that I had a 9 volt battery in the drawer.

Just so you know, smoke alarm batteries always go low at 2-3 am in the US, too. Never fails to happen here. :) Sorry about your interrupted sleep.

I change my smoke alarm batteries when I change the clocks twice a year. Otherwise, they did always start beeping in the night if I forgot!

We us we to have built in smoke alarms in our manufactured home. They were a pain a few times. We finally were able to undo them and now have ones on two ceilings that much better. I'm glad you fund good things to do with your grandchildren. I like sing a few older children songs to my youngest granddaughter. She'd not heard it. Enjoy our weekend.

DeleteSoil delivered in a bag - what a great idea! Here, it's only ever delivered dumped out of the truck in a great heap that always must be moved now if not sooner. With a bag, you can take your time.

DeleteWe have to have smoke alarms but they can sure be a pain, especially when they interrupt a good night's sleep. How wonderful to spend time with a giggling little one! It is a blessing to be able to see your grandchildren on a regular basis. I know that topsoil will come in handy but be careful with your back when moving it. Enjoy your weekend Sue!

This is the 1st home we've lived in with wired (vs battery) smoke alarms. I wish you could have seen me trying to keep my balance on a ladder as I took the thing apart... the tweeting driving me nuts. I'm not sure what I did, beyond cussing, but when I put it back together the shrill noise stopped.

DeleteI'm glad you liked the quotation. I like it too. I actually have it written on a 3 x 5 card and read it regularly. We do have some control over these things and for that, I am grateful. Your new soil looks fabulous and your gardens will thrive in lovely rich soil. For Mother's day, I told my son to have a dump truck of soil/compost (mix) delivered. As you see, I am a big fan of good soil. (My neighbors laughed at this Mother's day delivery.)
