Also known as The Poppy Line ..................but only at the right time of year!
This heritage railway runs for just 5¼ miles from Sheringham along the coast and then inland to Holt.
They run steam and old diesel engines and almost everyone who works on the trains and in the stations is a volunteer.
I took a trip along the line one morning
Passing the Golf Course on the way out of Sheringham. On the way back the air ambulance was sitting on the golf course - I looked online and it just said Medical Emergency - hope the golfer was OK.
And back to Sheringham again.
The tickets last all day so people can get on and off and catch a different train to get back which is what I should have done but I was feeling really tired and didn't fancy being at each station for an hour to catch the next train. So I stayed on the train there and back and just did some people watching (and listening!) instead- thinking how lucky I was not to be with the moaning woman sitting behind me!
Back Tomorrow
Sue
There's always one . . . not much fun for the folk she was with.
ReplyDeleteLooks a nice little trip. I think most of us have a soft spot for steam drains, especially those of us who read Thomas the Tank Engine books (Dirty Diesel!!) to their son for years! Carmarthen has Abergwili Railway, which only runs for a mile or so but they have been working on extending the line for years now.
There are so many heritage railways now - I think that for men it's like playing with their toy trains only better! I'll probably visit the nearest one to me at the weekend as it's their Wartime event.
DeletePeople watching is great fun. I feel sorry for moany people though - what a lot of fun they miss. xx
ReplyDeleteLuckily she only got on the train for the return journey - goodness knows why she took the trip at all
DeleteI think it is the excitement of the noise and steam which makes us love old trains
ReplyDeleteMuch more interesting than an electric thing rushing along
DeleteThat's such a pretty route!
ReplyDeleteLovely to see the sea across the fields
DeleteI love heritage railways, but always think it a shape that many of these lines are no longer connected to the national network.
ReplyDeleteAt Sheringham they are almost connected as the main line stops at the other side of the road!
DeleteMy kind of day out.
ReplyDeleteI regret not exploring the stations - oh well never mind
DeleteIt's a similar scenario on the North Yorkshire Railway. The stations are great for an explore but you need to study the timetable to make sure you can do it all in a day.
DeleteThere's something about those trains that draw me to them. The old stations are usually very attractive too.
ReplyDeleteSteam powered trains are so interesting and this one is looking magnificent. The stations you photographed look beautiful too. Travel by train is always much enjoyed. You had a great day . Moaning does nothing and is a waste of time. Sadly, some seem to enjoy it!
ReplyDeletethat sounds like a wonderful way to see the countryside. Sorry you were feeling tired but glad you got to enjoy the ide.

I love all that old steam train stuff and would have loved the ride - apart from the moaning woman!
ReplyDeleteAlison in Wales x
I've not been on a good train journey for a long time. I really should do something about that. Watching the scenery glide by is wonderful and on a steam train even better. You can't beat a bit of people watching either. I hope the moaning woman wasn't too loud, there's always one isn't there!!
ReplyDeleteI watched an old Midsomer Murders last night, with a lot of old railway emphasis, old steam engines, volunteers, all the same scenario you'd recognize. Talk about connecting, complaints about Beeching Except there was a murder. No, it wasn't Beeching.
ReplyDeleteThat looks like a lovely way to spend an afternoon.
ReplyDeleteGod bless.
I rode on this train many years ago. Such pretty views.
ReplyDeleteI am struck by how tidy that platform looks.
ReplyDeleteHow wonderful, Sue. It looks like a fabulous day out!
ReplyDeleteIf you ever go again take a look around Holt, it's a lovely little town
