The October Library Book Photo

My usual photo of books ordered and collected from the library van..................

............. whoops, I've chopped the top book off the photo, can't be bothered to take another. The top book is The Enchanted April by Elizabeth von Arnim a book reprinted from 1922 and I have no idea why I've ordered this - it must have been mentioned somewhere. Someone will tell me why I'm sure.
The book I'm most looking forward to reading is The Salt Path. The Skylarks War is another I've seen mentioned on a blog. It's actually a children's book about the Great War. The cover is lovely.
Lots of crime by authors I know and some I don't. The Bookshop Book explores the history of bookshops and asks authors for their favourites. It says "it's a love letter to bookshops all around the world". Right at the bottom is another cookery book to browse.  I've still got 4 books here, two from last month and two from the month before - really must do more reading!

What did I read from last month? and what went back unread?
The cookery book "gather" was perused without finding anything I wanted to make. "A Book of Silence" was skimmed but found a bit dry, interesting but long winded. "Gallows Court" I just couldn't get into. The five other crime books were all read/being read  including new Ann Cleeves and Ann Cleeves from before Vera and Shetland.
Book details are listed on the separate Books Read 2018.

  1. It does look interesting the Salt Path book, just read up on it as you recommended it. Lot of interesting reading, not sure I could read a dozen books a month though. Can't even break the internet code of our local library!

    1. In suffolk we log into the library site using library card number and a 4 number password then we can renew and order whatever - and all for free - wonderful!
The Salt Path was listed in the Wainwright country writing prize list - which is where I heard about it

  2. Down Yonder at the Back End - did you read that one - looks intriguing my dads mam used to say 'up yonder' all the time and as a young girl I used to wonder where this 'up yonder was' that grandad had always disappeared to when I asked! I had in mind she had meant he had gone to the 'lavvy' up the yard!

  3. An interesting lot of books Sue. Since my stroke I can only read a few words at a time and then in all gets muddled up, I always had a book on the go. I got a audio book from the library but could not get on with it.

  4. I bought The Salt Path on your recommendation and I absolutely loved it. I hope you do too.

Don't beat yourself up for not reading as much last month you were here there and everywhere AND being Little Miss DIY to boot. It was a busy month. But now that the nights are about to really draw in you can have cosy nights with coffee and good books and relax into the changing season.

    1. I've read 8 so far this month so not too bad considering all the blogging and other stuff.

I'm looking forward to The Salt Path - didn't have to wait too long for it from the library after all

  5. I am looking forward to the Ann Cleeves last in the Shetland series. We just read Cold Earth as part of my library mystery book club. We each take a turn to lead the discussion and it was my turn this month for the book chosen - Cold Earth. We don't have Wild Fire yet in Canada. I joined the club probably about 8 years ago, as I was doing full time babysitting for my grand child and I thought It would give me some adult contact. We also don't have The Salt Path available here yet and I am looking forward to that. Altho I didn't recommend it I love Enchanted April I hope you enjoy it--the movie of the book is a gem too. jean/winniipeg

    1. Wild Fire was very good and brought the series to a nice close.
Hope you are able to get it soon - and The Salt Path. Are you able to suggest books for your libraries to buy like I can here?

    2. Yes, I can suggest books but to the main administrative library and there is really no mechanism for hearing back if the book is selected, apart from checking regularly on line, Most books I do find at the library but the Salt Path they are not buying so I am going to treat myself to it! I do love books and that feeling when you read the first page and know that its going to be a good book and you enjoy it right to the last page. A warm summer day, the peace of the garden, a coffee and a good book.

  6. Wildfire is available in Canada now - a friend who was visiting yesterday had just finished it so I was asking her what she though - without spoilers. She was a bit disappointed, thought some actions were a bit out of character - but she was still glad to have read it.
I love books about books - "Howard's End is on he Landing" and "ExLibris" are both good ones that I'd recommend.
I just finished the latest Camilla Lackberg - "Girl in the Woods" - love her whole series and highly recommend them - but they do need to be read in order.

  8. London's Glory is a good book. I've read all of Christopher Fowler's books. A lot were on audio so I could work and listen. The Bryant and May series is very good, He also can be long winded in his description of things but he also gives you a lot of England's past history which I find very nice.

    1. I think I've tried the Bryant and May books before and not got on with them at all, but spotted this on the library van and thought I'd have another go at them

  9. There was a movie called "Enchanted April" - maybe that's why you ordered it. I also have just finished and enjoyed a book about Shetland by Ann Cleeves. They are worth trying.

  11. What a lovely selection to try out.
I can also recommend Enchanted April the movie, it is one of my favorites.
Her other books are an interesting read, a bit ahead of her time I think.
