December 12th and the Free Christmas Lunch

There is a very old charity trust in my village, set up years ago to help the poor. The trust owns small parcels of land which are rented out as "allotments". Nowadays the income is shared between the primary school and paying for a Christmas meal for the villagers over 60. It's held at a big pub not far up the A140 from the village. Last year I went on my own because Col was in Addenbrookes and the only person I knew was the lady who we bought the house from. This year of course I was on my own again and knew no one at all, but luckily I sat with some friendly people who were welcoming.

I'd chosen the vegetarian option of filo stack with creamy mushroom, leek and cashew sauce and roast new potatoes followed by a huge chocolate and walnut brownie with vanilla ice cream.
It was all delicious and it was only after I'd ordered it about a month ago that I looked on the blog and found it was exactly the same as what I'd chosen last year. Must be more adventurous next year!
I had no room for the mini mince pie that I could have had with coffee.

Last years meal took place on a horrible snowy day, this year it was nice and bright but chilly so after the raffle (didn't win anything this year) it was home to light the fire. I didn't need much to eat the rest of the day.

I completely forgot to take any photos - too busy eating and enjoying.

Thank you to everyone for comments yesterday. I surprise myself with my bright ideas sometimes!.

Back Tomorrow

  1. The food must have been good for you to choose it twice! Takes a lot of courage going on your own, Sue, to something like a sit down meal which you know will be full of strangers. Not sure I'd be able to do it. But I guess we don't know what we'll be able to do until we're actually confronted with it.

  2. I am glad you had a nice meal Sue. It is hard to go on your own some times but it gets easier as time goes on. Glad it was a nice day weather wise, it was here and I had a nice walk.
It's knit and natter today and it's WI tonight when the committee cook us a meal.

    1. Luckily the people I was sitting with were proper Suffolk people like me who I find easier to talk to.

  3. It is an Aries trait. We are fearless. Glad you enjoyed it. Turkey next year perhaps.

    1. I'm a LOT more fearless than I once was. I usually avoid Turkey but it was the only other thing to come with roast potatoes and veg.so you might be right, unless they come up with totally different choices. The Venison meatballs and the Bass were both served with mashed spuds and just red cabbage - boring!

  4. Late on yesterday's post but I really like that canvas & brilliant idea to take a photo & turn into cards. How nice is that, that your village takes on such a lovely tradition of providing a meal for those over 60. It certainly is one way to bring together those that may be feeling lonely and/or lost at this time of year when the emphasis seems to be on family - there are many out there for varying reasons that cannot be with family for the holiday season. your meal sounds very yummy. =^..^=

    1. It's difficult to get to know people in the village as it is so spread out and no organisations to belong to.

  5. It's a lovely village tradition. I remember you going last year ... hasn't time gone by so frighteningly quickly!

    1. What is odd is the number of over 60's in the village who don't go - fancy turning down a free meal!

  11. That's an inn with a bit of age, no doubt there are stories to be told about the place!
Your meal sounds tasty - and I am glad you enjoyed yourself. Just dive straight in and have fun is the way I approach these things, now that I am older. (My husband does not like socialising!)

  12. How nice that you went and enjoyed yourself. It takes a little practice to go to such outings alone but I find when I do I always have a good time.
