Jolly Jumble

Before charity shops were the norm jumble sales were the only place for finding secondhand children's books and clothes, so bringing up 2 and then 3 children on a low income I was always in the queue at all the jumble sales around Cotton and Bacton where we used to live.

Now a jolly old jumble sale is a rare treat, so I was very excited to see the signs for a Scout Jumble Sale because our Scout jumbles when I was a Cub Scout leader were always some of the best.

There was a good queue waiting and we all rushed in to look when the doors opened.

I found another House Of Puzzles jigsaw. This will be the last one I do at the moment because the gardening and growing season is fast approaching.

There were loads of books at 3 for  £1 and I got several for the grandchildren and also picked up a few  non fiction in the hope they would be wanted by Ziffit and luckily one was wanted for £1.62 and another for £1.82. Another they didn't want but I'll keep it for a while. Also spotted this Shirley Hughes book which I knew about but hadn't  seen before.
I didn't plough through the tons of clothes, no need to find clothes for grandchildren as they get given loads. I cast an eye over the china and other household stuff but nothing caught my eye.

Hope Eye Scout Group have a Jumble sale in January every year.

Hello and welcome to some more new followers, I still love to see the numbers creeping up and thank you for comments yesterday.

  1. Sadly there aren't many jumble sales around here, although I think there's one in the neighbouring village hall this month, must check the newsletter. I remember going to jumbles with my mum when I was a child....I seem to recall a lot of pushing and shoving and even yanking things out of people's hands!

  2. I am quite excited Sue as about a five minute walk from us there is a church and I see they are doing a jumble sale next weekend, so we are going for a look, haven't been to one for goodness knows how long.

    1. Back in the day there seemed to be one every Saturday through January and February, I used to cycle all over the place for them

  3. I used to go to them some 40 years ago when I was first married but still a student. Great bargains back then. I haven't seen a jumble sale advertised for years. Glad you found some bargains.

  4. Well done on your weekend trawl of charity shop/scout jumble sale.
I agree with several who commented on the jug. It will bring a smile to several faces I think, not least those of your grandchildren.
I used to love scout jumble sales when my children were small. As you say they were the best and occasionally I’d find school trousers with intact knees for the boys.
The other thing I used to look out for were hand knitted jerseys that I could unpick and reknit for them.

  5. It's many years since I went to a jumble sale. They just don't seem to have them round here any more.
When I was a child there seemed to be one every week and my mother used to send me with my three younger sisters and five shillings to see if I could kit us all out which I usually managed.....and with change too.
Another gorgeous jigsaw. I really like the HOP ones with their unusual shapes.

    1. I'm pleased I discovered the HOP puzzles they seem easier for me to do, some are so difficult I can't be bothered

  6. My poor mother was really unhappy when as a child I won a raffle at a church jumble sale. the prize was a pair of rabbits and a small hutch. I was delighted but I can now see why she was not so happy. Fortunately we did have a house with a garden rather than a flat.

  7. How wonderful Sue, I can't remember the last time I went to a jumble sale but I used to love them. Charity shops seem to have taken over the jumble sales locally.

  9. No jumble sales, or boot sales, close to me either. Lots of charity shops though. It is a shame that some of them are almost as expensive as the shops. I have seen items from Lidl that retailed at £3.00 priced up at £4.50.

  11. i asked for a jigsaw puzzle for Christmas so I'm looking forward to trying it. I was really struck by something you wrote some days ago that you are having to draw on your savings to live where you want to live in the cottage that you and Colin lived. I hope that when you get the state pension that will make things easier? I also wanted to mention that I noticed that the blog Shoestring Cottage, sometimes takes in exchange students as a way of boosting their finances.

  12. Love going to a jumble sale! I can't wait until things warm up and the garage sale season starts around here. I didn't go at all last year -it's not so much fun on your own - but I think I shall just go this year!

    1. I actually prefer going to boot sales on my own as Col used to be finished looking long before me and then he would be tapping his foot waiting!

  13. When my Dad helped out at the scouts and my brother was a member me and my mum used to help out at all the jumble sales. We were usually stuck selling the shoes as nobody else would do it. We ran it shoe shop style, with one on the table and one behind on the stage that I had to pair up as we sold them. Jumble sales were really popular back in the day, but like you say it's always a nice surprise to see a sign for one these days.

    1. We had regular mums who were always keen to run the clothing stall and they also ran a Cancer Research Jumble sale where the clothes were piled so high you couldn't see who was behind them!

  15. Hi Sue. Jumble sales are great, if few & far between. My mum went to one in Sutton, near Woodbridge and returned with a nearly-new Mary Quant DollyRocker frock for a 17 year old me - fab!
Liked your pictures of Needham Market church. My sister lives in Woolpit, now there’s a lovely church, especially when floodlit.

  16. That sounds like a fun jumble sale and you found another puzzle in addition to books! I love puzzles in the winter but like you I don't have the time for them the rest of the year. Your follower numbers really are going up - you'll be at 500 before long! I have enjoyed your blogs for years and obviously many other do too!

  18. I haven't heard of a jumble sale round here for absolutely ages although I do reckon half the stalls in the school fairs are modernised jumble at a modernised price!
