The Second August Library Book Photo

Another collection of books ordered on line.

The one I'm most looking forward to is the 'City of Pearl' by Alys Clare  - I love her mixture of history, mystery and a touch of magic.

Rachel Ferguson 'Footman for the Peacock'. The only other Dean Street Press Furrowed Middlebrow book the library has in stock. I have tried and failed with a book by her before but will try again.
Then a couple of recent British Library Crime Classic reprints. I can't remember why I ordered the Willa Cather - I'll try it anyway. Melissa Harrison has written several non-fiction on countryside subjects but this one is fiction and as it's set in Suffolk I thought I'd better try it.
The teeny book on the top was a surprise. I wasn't expecting such a small book, it's this

and is just a few pages about the joy of giving and receiving books as gifts.

Frances Evesham is a new to me author. 'Death in a Desert Land' is Andrew Wilson's 3rd story using Agatha Christie as the main character. The book by Joy Ellis is in a different series to her Fenland crime stories - hope it will be as good and finally a light Erica James book for a change.

Should keep me busy for the next 4 weeks

These were what I collected 4 weeks ago. The ones I read have been added to the Books Read 2019 page,

some went back unread as I couldn't get into them. The Jack Monroe - Tin Can Cook was mainly aimed at families so would leave me with half-a-tin of this and that to use. It would certainly be excellent for giving to people using food banks. Some recipes sounded OK, some a bit weird but as I'm lucky enough to have access to fresh food - often from the garden. I'll stick to fresh while I can.

Back Tomorrow

  2. Are you listening to The Offing being read by Kevin Whateley on radio 4 at 12 pm mid day, it is a delightful countryside story, enough to make me buy the book next time I am in a bookshop. Give it a go, also on I player.

    1. Oh, thank you for that suggestion. I caught a bit of Kevin Whateley reading something last night when I went to bed (repeated from midday)but fell asleep before the end when they would have said what it was. I've added my name to the library waiting list as I'd rather read it than be read to

    2. Delurking to say thank you from me too, I found this on bbc sounds and have listened to the first 5 episodes, less than 15 mins each, quite delightful, I will request book from library service when I return from my holiday.

  3. A good selection.

With the nights suddenly starting to draw in I think I'll be getting back to reading through my collection. It's gone down by about half now, but I don't think there's any danger of me having nothing to read

    1. I think I've gone from the 1,400+ at the smallholding down to between 400 and 500. Still some to clear out and plenty to read

  4. I might try City of Pearl. I loved All Soul's Trilogy for the mix of history, magic, and generally riveting storyline.

    1. The Alys Clare book is part of a long series set in 11th century Fenland so best to start at the beginning. Have a look on Fantastic Fiction for the order of them.

  5. Sounds an interesting collection of books. I am going to try and read the audio books again especially now the nights are getting darker, I miss reading a book so much since the stroke but I am so lucky in other ways.
    Have a good weekend. Sue.

    1. I would miss reading a book too as I find it hard to concentrate when someone is reading to me

  6. I have been reading quite a bit recently mainly chick lit. Simple pick up put down stuff. I know you are a prolific reader do you have times when you can only manage one genre?

    1. I can always read crime but have to be in the right mood for serious non-fiction. Rarely read chick lit because they always have happy endings that make me cry!

  7. I always find your non-fiction interesting. I picked up a pile of books from the library yesterday - only one fiction - a Miss Read book - the rest are things that just caught my eye.

    1. I'm lucky enough to own nearly all Miss Reads books picked up from charity shops many years ago. Sometimes they are just right for an easy read - and the school is just like my primary school was in the early 60's

    2. Have you changed the name of your blog back to the old name? - just noticed it is different - am only just catching up with everyone after a hectic few weeks!
This was a Miss Read I don't have but will look out for a copy at a booksale. I got a few when The Works used to have those 3 for £5 or something but have never managed to have all the set yet.

    3. Yes, last Friday on a whim I decided to have a change of name as I wanted to get Suffolk back into the name and I won't always be up the end of a lane plus the cottage is really a house! The old blog was A Quiet Life in Suffolk and Frugal in Suffolk before that.

    4. Gosh I hadn't even noticed!!

  8. Thank you for prompting me back to my library! We don't share the same reading tastes, but obviously we both love books! My husband passed away a few months prior to yours, so I do enjoy reading how you're getting on with life and I love your new blog name!

    1. Thank you. Sometimes being alone is hard work but mostly my days are OK as long as I don't think ahead too far. reading and blogging are the things that get me through

    2. I know what you mean! You really don't know what it feels like till it happens, do you?
I do a lot of different crafts and am trying to use them to help others. This morning I've been sewing bags for the local food bank. It's good to have a focus, keep up with the blog!

  9. Love seeing the books you're reading. I read a lot when I was with Mum. We both love reading. The charity shop books are really cheap and many of them are still in the shop charts! Mum also saved some of the books she'd read so I could read them. I brought a few of them back with me. I tried to limit myself but my case was still too heavy lol.

I like the new name! Suffolk is such a lovely quiet place to live a quiet full life.

    1. You had some good weather for your visit over here. I wish I'd just kept the old blog going when we moved here - but a new blog seemed like a good idea at the time

  10. That's a lot of books; and I'll jot a few of those down for my list as I love a good mystery/crime story.
