The Worryingly Small Library Book Haul!

Lots of the books I have on order are new and not yet in stock or have very long waiting lists so only 4 to collect - much reading from my own shelves this month I think, although the Lettice Cooper book is quite a long read as long as I can get into it.

The Offing was read on radio 4 a few weeks ago and was highly praised. I've read a few of Barbara Kingsolver's books in the past, not sure what this one is and just one crime............ by Cora Harrison, which it turns out is the second in a recent series set in Victorian times and not, as I thought, her most recent in the Reverend Mother series set in Ireland. So I hope I can make sense of it.

These are the books I collected 4 weeks ago

Some went back unread - either I couldn't get into the story or I couldn't be bothered and I still have Erica James to be read, I know it will make me cry and I don't feel like crying!.
Books read from this heap have been added to the 2019 page as have some of my own books that I read too.

Back Tomorrow
Sue

  1. I'm really struggling to read at the minute. I seem to fall asleep after a few pages. I too have borrowed and returned many unread books recently.

  2. I am reading The Offing at the moment, having to ration myself as I don’t want to finish it, just beautifully written. Off topic, do you leave your beetroot in ground all winter or should I pull them all and store. Many thanks.

    1. I wish I had enough to store this year!
But yes they are best lifted, twist off tops and store in a box of damp sand in layers. Last year because we had such a dry summer and autumn and I had a better crop I did leave them in the ground until they finished in December. Frosts would damage them

  3. I loved The Offing on Radio 4 read by Kevin Whatley. He was perfect for it.

  4. It's strange how some books sound good on paper but turn out the opposite when in your hands.
Someone else on another blog was praising The Offing so I'll have to check our library catalogue. 'Our' Captain Cook had ties with Robin Hood's Bay :)

  5. How much reading do you do in a day? I find it a struggle to get through more than one book a week these days. Currently I am reading a C J Sansom so that will take me a while. Love his novels though and it's been a while since I've read one, then I saw his Tombland in paperback at Tesco for just £3.50 and had to succomb. Yesterday it was the new Elly Griffiths, The Circle of Stones so had another weak moment. Need to work the night shift to get through a few on the pile!!

All your book list are "strangers" to me. Enjoy!

  6. You always come up with authors I've never heard. So I have made a note of some with the intention of 'dipping my toes', lol.

I was intrigued by National Provincial by Lettice Cooper. In the 60s I worked at the Provincial Building Society in Bradford and knew that it had another name prior to its head office moving from Leeds to Bradford. Looking on Amazon I see that, although the book is set in Leeds (Aire), it doesn't have anything to do with my former workplace.

  9. I have just been browsing a few magazines at night now for ideas -I read The Life of Stuff and Miss Read and am now trying to get into the Not in Your Genes book which sounds interesting but a bit complicated. We only get 3 weeks on loan from our library and I find I can't read them fast enough. Interested to know what the Lettice Cooper book is like.

  11. I am having a hard time reading one of my books. I should have known not to get this one as I have had trouble with this author's books before.

Hope you get your other books very soon.

    God bless.

  12. Have you read Diary of a Bookseller? If not I can really recommend it. It is by Shaun Blythell and is my this month's Book Group book. It will make you smile from beginning to end.

  13. I'm listening to "Testaments" on BBC4 . I've got the large print edition and the Kindle edition as well. I enjoy Margaret Atwood's writing and she tells a good tale. I find it easier to listen sometimes as one of my medications makes my vision blurry.
I loved "The Poisonwood Bible" and "The Bean Trees" by Barbara Kingsolver. If you haven't read her before, she's a great author.

  14. Three of four of the new stack look interesting to me. I've never read Kingsolver, but I don't think I'd start with essays, as I am not a fan of books of short stories or essays unless they are really well tied together. I assumed that Winter of Despair would be a downer of a book, but finding that it is a mystery has piqued my interest.
