Winter TV

There was no sign of snow and the temperature was in the mid teens but Winter started on Sunday. Why? .........because Ski Sunday began it's run on BBC 2. It's a favourite of mine because of the views of the mountains and snow - neither of which are normal for Suffolk!
I'm not sure how many weeks of it there are but it's building up to the Winter Olympics on February 4th, when there will be two weeks of all the winter sports to watch.
Talking sport........... completely forgot that Tennis is back on Amazon Prime, this time the ATP Cup, although without me watching on Sunday, Dan Evans won his singles and playing with Jamie Murray they also won their doubles. It might be only on early and late so I may miss more anyway.

Instead of watching tennis I was catching up on the first two episodes of Around The World in 80 days  so that I could watch the next two on Sunday evening. I've never read the book so have no idea if the programme follows the book or deviates completely but it makes good TV.

Another new series caught my eye and is featured in the Radio Times (the double Christmas issue didn't fall apart as it is bound rather than stapled but I unwrapped the New Year edition and found it had missed being stapled completely!) The new programme is called The Tourist - and is set in the Australian Outback. Lots of violence, mystery, heat, dust and a man with no memory.

I shall enjoy the 25 episodes of Antiques Road Trip starting this week. These were made when Auction Rooms were closed to the public and it was all online or on the books and  like the celebrity version that's just finished, hardly any money is made which is a bit sad.

Monday evenings is still quizzy Mondays for a few more weeks until Only Connect finishes and it's back to the lovely island of St Marie on Fridays for a run of 8 episodes of Death in Paradise.

Next week I believe a new series of Vera starts and Snooker too.

I do enjoy a new season with good programmes to keep me company.

Now TV from 2 years ago......................I was searching through the blog for something and found the following......... cast your mind back to January 2020, that's before we had heard anything much about the pandemic and certainly nothing had happened in this country, this is what I wrote on the 25th January 2020.................

Anyone else been watching the Indoor Bowls Championship on TV last week? I was half watching on Friday afternoon but ended up turning off as there were so many people in the audience cough, cough coughing.  It sounded like a wonderful place for catching something nasty!

Now we know where it all started!!

Back Tomorrow
Sue

  1. I remember that coughing illness around Christmas and January as you describe. Everyone I know who had it now assumes they had Covid.

  2. Haven't watched ATWin80Days yet. Looking forward to Vera on Sunday - but will miss my Quizzy Mondays. I'm sorry that Jeremy Paxman is in poor health, and wonder if he will give up UC soon. I'm enjoying the new series of Father Brown, altho they have strayed a long way from the original books now. Do you think we will get some more "live better on a budget" type programmes this Spring, or have they exhausted that format? They really ought to come and interview frugal bloggers (like us) we could teach them a thing or two!

    1. I've never been a fan of Jeremy Paxman but it's sad that he has Parkinsons. He does seem to be struggling in some of the UC programmes.

I see Martin Lewis is back. I've not unwrapped next weeks RT yet to see what other treats we have coming up

    2. We both really noticed it on this weeks edition, some of his words were very slurred. It must be so difficult for such an intelligent, quick witted man to be going through this. We both said perhaps this will be his final series.

  3. "Old age never comes alone" my late ma-in-law said, how right she was. Didn't know that about Jeremy Paxman - what a shame when your mind is so important to your job. We have been enjoying UC all over Christmas and indeed, whenever it has been on during the year. Tam always amazes us with her knowledge - she's far better on the sciences than Keith and I.

If there are anymore Frugal programmes, I am sure Mean Queen will have a return to our screens.

Sue - just to let you know I have noted and deleted your details (if that makes sense) and am just wrapping your book ready to send in 5 mins or so. Enjoy. Now, THAT was a woman who knew how to live VERY frugally indeed. She makes Mean Queen look like a spendthrift!

  4. Settling down to TV with the knitting is a wonderful way to spend the dark winter evenings. Thank you for the reminder about the tennis on Amazon Prime. I love watching the tennis.

    1. My knitting is limited to dishcloths and I don't need many of them now I have a dishwasher!
I think I'm often half watching and half reading or half watching and half preparing blog posts nowadays. Multi tasking!

  6. Glad to hear there is a new Vera coming soon. The television at my daughter's house is terrible, dark and gloomy but just right for all those Scandinavian horrors!

  7. Glad to hear your are enjoying Around the World in 80 days - like you haven't read the book but am really enjoying it. Not watching The Tourist - living alone don't like creepy things at bedtime. I enjoy Antiques Road Trip especially when it is a new series. Yes I agree that things are looking up. PS Not a snooker fan.

hear Vera has something new coming. I love her husband hate her lol. But he loves Shetland we just finished watching which is by the same author. I have not watched around the world in 80 days not sure I will get to it. Not sure why. Funny how you had that post about people coughing then and what a mess it became. Who could know what was to come?
About the only sports we watch is American football we are into play off season and our team has a chance.

  10. I think it'll be a while before The Tourist is on free to air down here. It can be viewed on Stan if you want to pay for streaming.
And of course for those who are interested We have the cricket to keep us amused at the moment as well as the tennis day & night sessions which have just begun. Gives me something to watch when it's too hot to be outside

  11. Don't you just hate the stapling and missed-stapling of the Radio Times. One of the first things I do now after removing it from it's soaked through wrapper is to make sure the staples are properly in and flat, one nasty cut from sliding my finger along on non-centre page and getting it sliced open was all it took for that to become a habit!!

I'll be sad when Only Connect finishes is a couple of weeks, but I'm struggling to answer more than one question and half a dozen missing vowels now we are at quarter final stage.

    1. It's the first RT in 7 months that's fallen to pieces so not too bad and only 2 have gone missing and they extended my subs. I'm really enjoying it and the Only Connect puzzle in the RT is easier than the one on TV!

  12. Be happy to send some snow your way...got 38cm on Monday. :)

I do remember your post in January 2020...I had just returned from the UK a couple of days before and had a connecting flight through Toronto to the US. Had several non-stop coughers on what was luckily only an hour long flight, but even so, I pulled up my scarf around my nose and mouth (prescient of me, yes?). That was the same day Toronto airport had their first cases. I began tracking the data from that day forward.

  13. We still have no snow. Usually, by now I am cross country skiing from the back of my property in to the Town Forest trails. This is my winter sport. I like Antiques Roadshow but it's showing repeats. Our sports teams are struggling with Covid and many players are unable to play. I've gone off watching sports on TV largely because they seem to think they are invincible against Covid. Foolhardy.

    1. It's the same here with football teams cancelling matches and people off work after testing positive.
We might get no snow at all or maybe some sometime - we never know!

  17. I quit paying for TV when Laura left, maybe earlier. I get on well with Netflix.

  18. My daughter watched Around the World in 80 Days last week. She liked it! I remember watching the movie years ago. I am trying to finish watching Star Trek Enterprise.. Captain Archer. Then I will go back to a British tv on my Roku TV. I've not been in there for awhile. We've had a lot of rain today and wind gusts and rain late Sat into Sun a.m. I am glad we have rain and no ice. Hopefully not too much flooding going on. Will see what happens this week! Take care!
