Short of Things to Write About

I'm not going far at the moment, saving fuel for the things I really want to do but that means not much to write about.

I put a photo of the first two yellow tomatoes, eaten about  two weeks ago on Monday's post

First two Artisan Tomatoes from Thompson and Morgan seeds

but this is how they should look, after waiting a while........picked this week ......... a bit bigger and with a red blush on the yellow. Good flavour too and quite prolific.. I'm hoping there are 5 of equal size to pick and enter in the Bacton Flower and Produce show in a couple of weeks. Unusual varieties and labelled with their name sometimes helps when it comes to the judges awarding a prize!

I will probably grow them again

But here's something I won't buy again. Someone mentioned fish cakes when I last did a post about trying various supermarket vegetarian products. So I looked to see what Morrisons had in their freezers. These were a bit bland and could have done with some black pepper or perhaps chili..............anything!

I used to make salmon fishcakes years ago for the family, bit of a faff for one person even if I froze them plus I'd have to buy potatoes that mash, which I don't really like for anything else. I can manage quite easily without.

Thanks to the blog............. while looking for posts about aubergines I discovered they'd been used with a Red Thai Curry Kit to make a batch of vegetable curry..............long forgotten. So a kit has been added to the shopping list and curry will be made as soon as there are a couple more aubergines big enough.

Back Tomorrow
Sue

  1. The tomatoes are really most attractive. Good luck with the show. xx

  2. What pretty tomatoes - bet they taste amazing too. I had the first couple of tiny cherry tomatoes from the Polytunnel this week. SUCH flavour - unlike the bland Spanish-grown things on offer in the shops.

If you have an Aldi near you try their Prawn, Chilli and Lemongrass fishcakes. Oh MY! They are delicious.

  4. The tomatoes look fab! You could use frozen mash or dried potato flakes to make fishcakes and throw in a ton of flavourings. I was thinking of getting some to keep in my storecupboard and do some testing. I saw some instant buttery mash in my local Lidl yesterday in the 'when it's gone' section and it started me thinking about it.

  5. I'm not sure I'd dismiss those Salmon and Broccoli Fishcakes quite so fast. I have to read all labels to the final full stop, and if it said 'chilli' I'd have to leave them in the store, as I can't touch the stuff ... so you can add it to your heart's content and I could buy it, and perhaps add another sauce.

  6. I'm not surprised you've run out of things to blog about. You do amazingly well with your 'quiet life' postings which I couldn't do and that's why I don't have a blog. You could do a question and answer for your commenters (is that a word?) eg favourite music, film, book, colour, do they have an accent, favourite holiday destination, etc, etc.

Unfortunately my husband does all the cooking now which he hates so some of our meals are the type that come in a box, but not salmon as neither of us like it. He's getting better, (smile).

  7. I love the way you try to produce interesting meals for yourself - I could not be bothered. Luckily my carer provides my mid day meal (I pay her of course) and they are excellent. Lemon sole with new potatoes and broccoli today. Huge mixed salad tomorrow.

  8. Fingers crossed that you get five of those lovely tomatoes in time for the show. I remember I won a first with five matching Sungold tomatoes when they were a relatively new thing. And like you said the judges do like it when you add the variety of the fruit or veg to your place card.

  11. Fishcakes - have you considered frozen mashed potato? It goes against everything I think is important about homemaking but something made me buy a bag of Tesco's frozen mashed potato, it was just £1 at the time.

I swear that I will never bother making mashed potato from scratch again.

There, I've confessed to my sin :)

  15. I love the unusual varieties of tomatoes, I'm growing some that are 'blush' can't remember the name, even when I stop growing anything else I'll try to grow tomatoes, flavour, colour and versatility.
I remember my dear old mum used the like the fish cakes from m and s, but you probably need a second mortgage to buy stuff from there these days!

  17. If you can get to a Tesco their Tesco finest Salmon spinach and lemon fishcakes (in the chiller section but you can freeze them) are very nice they are £2 when on clubcard offer and one with salad makes a nice dinner the smoked haddock ones are good too.

  18. Your yellow/blush tomatoes look perfect and I bet they taste good. Fresh from the garden is always best. I've tried buying frozen crab cakes and they were terrible too. Very little crab was in the cake. They were more breadcrumbs, salt and seasonings. Legal Seafood restaurant makes the absolute best crab cake.

  19. Salmon & dill burgers (recipe on BBC good food website) are very tasty, easy to make and don't have potatoes in them. They freeze well too. Fiona.

  22. I am getting pretty excited about my tomatoes. None ripe yet, but I did pick five jalapenos and a zucchini. I cannot remember what you call them there? Marrows maybe? But I am excited for that first tomato, and you are lucky to be getting them already.
