Vegetarian Taste Test (Home Made This Time)

Having tried all the weird and wonderful pastry lattice things from various supermarkets, I made my own.

Using a pack of ready rolled puff pastry, filled with a mix of potato (chopped small and cooked for a few minutes) defrosted peppers from the freezer and grated cheddar cheese plus plenty of black pepper.

I ate one and put the others in the freezer. It certainly had more flavour than many of the supermarket things I've tried but I thought there was a bit too much pastry, so need a way to squash in more filling, yet still keep the edges sealed.

The Aldi Puff Pastry is 85p so I think these must cost less than 50p each  - a guesstimate as I didn't note how much cheese I used.

I need to stick a reminder  on the lap-top to remind me to look in spam. Forgot for a few days and Everyone was in there ! Pat, Sue and Joy - for goodness sake blogger they are NOT spam!

  1. They sound delicious. I often make something similar but use pesto, tomatoes and mozzarella. X

  3. Daft, isn't it? I have no idea what's going on but I expect this whole spam thing is a very blunt sword, probably based on key words and structure. To be fair, it does seem to be catching all my spam now - just a shame it also catches lots of my good blogging friends too.
I just have to remember to check every day. xx

    2. The pastry lattices puff things were certainly better than some of the ones I've tried

  4. My favourite filling is feta mixed with a little mint and grated lemon zest, and a little egg. Use the remainder of the egg to brush the pastry. Delicious!

  5. What confuses me about this blogger issue is that sometimes my comment will 'take' and then the next time I leave a comment onthe very same blog, it doesn't take.

  6. I have tried your method Sue, I think the answer is to make your own shortcrust pastry, the puff pastry just seems to dominate and explode everywhere...

    1. My pastry was once compared to cardboard! so now I only use it for quiche bases

  9. I will try Aldi puff pastry. Didn't have any success with Lidls. (I usually get jusrol when it's on offer and freeze it) Re the fillings issue, one of my cookbooks - will have a hunt later - has this nifty method where you cut a square base and a bugger square top. You assemble the pasty, base, filling, top - and match up the corners, and put a little pleat at the middle of each side, and seal firmly. This is a clumsy explanation - but you DO get a better pastry-to-filling ratio.

    1. I hadn't tried it before but it seemed OK. I usually buy Puff Pastry in a block and cut in 3 before freezing but then can't always roll it as thin as I want.
That squares method sounds as if it would work well.

  10. Sounds lovely. I've done this with leftover ratatouille. It was not my best batch of rattie - I had used too much tomato paste and it was very strongly flavoured but that worked brilliantly with the pastry.

  14. Your veggie/cheese filled puff pastry looks excellent and I bet it was very tasty. Much better than the frozen prepared food veggie meals. I buy frozen pie crust, puff pastry, pizza and filo dough. My skill for making dough is zero. Give me frozen dough and magically a meal can be put together.

    1. I always used to make things with shortcrust pastry as it's so much cheaper than buying when there were 5 of us. But now it's just me I prefer to buy it ready made except for quiche bases

  16. I always find that I need to over season veggie pies and pasties or else cook onions with some curry powder to add to any leftovers that i am using, and yes squishing in as much filling as possible is a good way to make them tastier, especially with Puff Pastry.

I'm sorry that I keep being sent to your Spam Folder ... it's getting claustrophobic in there!! I have a feeling that I get sent to Weavers spam folder too as any comments I leave on her blog never see the light of day.
