Cold Cures

I finished all the Elderberry syrup I'd made before the worst of the cold arrived so have researched some more homemade cures

First there was the one I tried from Jack Monroe's 2018 blog

Hot Nurse
 30g fresh ginger,
6 fat cloves of garlic,
2 x 400g canned chopped tomatoes,
1 tbsp medium curry powder,
1tsp turmeric
Salt and pepper
1 can water

I didn't have fresh ginger and put in too much dried (and less garlic).....made it brain-blowing HOT!

Then I found this, also from Jack but from 2013, sounds more interesting with onion - anti bacterial and parsley - full of Vitamins. Haven't tried it yet but probably wouldn't use the vegetable stock cube just salt and pepper and maybe two tins of tomatoes rather than one.

Feisty Soup
 1 onion
1 fat clove of garlic
a thick slice of ginger
1 red chilli
a splash of oil
1 x 400g carton or tin of chopped tomatoes
1 vegetable stock cube, dissolved in 200ml boiling water
juice of 1⁄2 a lemon or 2 teaspoons bottled lemon juice
a handful of parsley

Next this one  in Susan Hills  book 'Through the Kitchen Window'...blimey ....2 heads of garlic!
Although it says boiling the un-peeled cloves first makes it more friendly.

But this one below sounds much more appealing as well as easier

Cider and Rosemary Cure
Boil a large sprig of rosemary in some cider for 5 minutes. Strain into a glass and carry up to bed, get under the covers and drink. This cure is said to induce sweating which will kill the cold.

From the book 'From Mother to Daughter" by Vivienne Bolton.

Have to buy cider for wassailing on old twelfth night on the 17th so will get stocked up!

Thank you everyone for comments yesterday

Back Soon

  1. I swear by good old honey and fresh lemon juice in hot water when I've got a cold...if I feel really bad I dissolve 2 soluble aspirin in it as well.

    1. I used to try honey and lemon with some cinnamon mixed in too, in hot water with a couple of paracetamol but forgot about it with that cold after Christmas.

  3. You can buy dried elderberries from Health Food Shop outlets (or online). I have to say, whilst garlic does help ease a cold, the thought of two whole heads of it in soup is a bit daunting! Did the Hot Nurse remedy help at all?

    1. I thought a bowl of hot nurse put off a cold before Christmas but it didn't do anything to help once the after Christmas cold was here

  4. Oh my! Probably sucking and sipping anything helps with cold symptoms...but definitely sweating it out seems required...our bodies chill the germs to below their ideal temperature and then blast them with heat to kill them...it’s actually our bodies response to the virus rather than the virus that gives us chills and sweats. x

    1. Probably no cures still available for the common cold - I was hoping to find a cure and make my fortune!!

  5. These looks lots of fun and I am sure they will help with soothing the symptoms. They are hardly cures though. Not a lot one can do, at the moment, to cure a cold, which, of course as we know, a virus.

  6. I've not had a cold since I stopped doing supply teaching. I blame the kids!!! I think you'll have a lot of fun trying out these recipes. Me, I'm boring and stick with hot honey and lemon, maybe with ginger, and a dose of pain killer when needed!

  7. Warm cider with rosemary sounds the best for me, but, fingers crossed we are bug free at the moment, I hope it last.

  10. I hardly ever catch colds and flu - can't remeber the last bout I had so count myself lucky but have always had orange and honey with some powdered Vitamin C stirred in if I feel a sore throat coming on or I sneeze too much as that is often the first signs. The drinks with garlic would make me more ill as I have an allergy to garlic! It is surprising the old books use garlic in the recipes as it is something that wasn't traditionally used in British cooking I thought - I cannot remember my gran ever having bought any to make anything. Maybe Mre Beeton did?

  11. They all sound pretty good, but garlicky! I guess the garlic could just scare off the colds. Warming and delicious though I am sure and I am sure that warming foods definitely help you feel better. Thank you for stopping by and for your comment!

  13. Interesting. Not sure I'd try any except maybe the cider one. Though drinking a glass of that would probably put me to sleep! I'd sleep away the cold lol

  14. What an interesting blog! Just found you whilst browsing through a 'best blogs' list. Sorry to hear you have been under the weather and hope all the nasty bugs have left you now? And although time has passed, so sorry to hear about your husband too. Bereavement is a tough thing to go through, friends and family help of course, but in the end, they have their lives to lead. I hope this year, after a crappy start, will be better for you.

  15. I made a pot of the Hot Nurse - not sure it actually did any good, but my husband enjoyed it. However, I do like the sound of the cider and rosemary cure, much more fun.
The illustrations in the Susan Hill book are lovely, even if her list of 'Ten Pleasures of the Winter Kitchen' starts off well, then becomes a bit too 'rustic' for me!

  18. A shot glass of good whiskey( I like Jamesons), 1/4 c of lemon juice, 2 T honey, hot water. Mix together and sip slowly. You'll sweat out the cold and not smell of garlic.

  20. I drink hot lemon tea with some honey to get rid of my cold. Though to tell you the truth, I don't know if it really gets rid of the cold or just helps with the symptoms.

    God bless.
