21st September and a Saturday Round-up

Last Saturday I was worried.........worrying about things that might not happen, things other people don't worry about.

So the other side of the coin...........the things that don't frighten or worry me that maybe worry some people
  • Live mice in the bedroom in the middle of the night
  • Large spiders walking round the living room
  • Earwigs appearing on the kitchen work top (they'd come out of some cooking apples)
  • Standing up and talking in front of a room full of people
  • Living in an out-of-the-way place on my own
  • Being seen without make-up
  • Strange noises in the night! -  It will be a Muntjac  although it can sound like someone being murdered.
  • Going into a room/meeting/whatever, where I don't know anyone

Haven't found anything at a car boot sale to blog about for weeks until last Sunday, when I found this lot. Mainly books for the grandchildren again, 2 are specially for Willow who will be a big sister in January. Two are sticker books to put away until they are older.  The "Verdict of Twelve" is a British Library Crime Classic that I've not read because the library don't have it. £3 for the 6 children's books and 50p for mine.

A tube of toothpaste and two clip top bottles all for £1 each. I'm not having much luck with finding bottles for the limoncello that I'm going to make for the hampers. I found one that had a stain inside that just wouldn't clean and another that didn't keep tight closed. They both went in the glass recycling bank. These two are better and even buying 4 from boot sales and chucking out two is still cheaper than buying 2 new.
Packet of Nasturtium seeds for next summer for 50p and also 50p for my third try at making a scrapbook of country sayings and cuttings from the folklore diaries. I got  books from boot sales earlier this year which I thought would do but the pages were too thin in one and another didn't have enough pages. Both of those were re-sold when I did my 2nd car boot sale.

Another week of being tired, so a bit of gardening and a bit of resting and no swimming (tut tut!). The autumn garden clearing looks a big job when I think about doing it on my own, but if it's tackled a bit at a time I guess I'll get there in the end, just like last year.

This week I'm grateful for
  • Having some quiet days
  • The boiler being serviced with no problems
  • Time spent with DiL and Willow on a trip out
  • Being a pensioner - for cheap fish and chips!

This weekend the  Rugby World Cup has started, so I will enjoy watching the games and it carries on all through October, although because of the time difference (it's in Japan), all the matches are on TV in the mornings, some at early as 5.45- don't think I'll be watching those live. Also hope to visit a village garage sales event and coffee morning............not my village.............nothing happens here!

Have a good weekend
Back Monday

  1. Morning Sue. Most of the things on your 'not worried about' list wouldn't worry me either....except for one. The things that worry me the most about living here on my own, if hubby goes before me (as you've probably gathered from my blog, we live in a very out-of-the-way place too) are 8-legged things (can't even say the word I have such a phobia about them), and our vet and my dentist being so far away that I'd find it nigh on impossible to get to them by myself. Yay for the rugby, looking forward to it (we'll be recording the matches, I expect...can't see husband getting up early to watch!). Have a nice weekend Sue.

    1. I've no way to record the rugby so will probably only watch the sensible time ones!
And I forgot about Strictly starting too - Good

  2. I have been on my own for a very long time, now in my 70’s, my late husband died in our 50’s. I still drive and live in the centre of a small village, but tucked away. What helps me is being organised so I know what I am doing for the next few weeks, WI, films, dance or art class, walking group etc so I can see when I may be alone for a few days and plan for that in advance. None of the things on your list worry me but falling downstairs or tripping in the garden does so extra vigilant with these activities. Have a productive weekend.

    1. I guess I will need to start being careful about falling soon. Touch wood it's not happened yet

    1. Just waiting for the chimney sweep and then nothing much to worry about for a while

  4. I am scared of snakes and crocodiles but that is because I was a child in Africa and would have tried to make a pet out of any animal I found. There is nothing in the UK that frightens me. Like Sarah I am very careful of our stairs which are very steep and with narrow treads so I am aware of how dangerous they are.

  5. I was do lucky a few years back. I managed to get a couple of dozen clip top bottles for 50p each. It was a DIY brewing shop that was closing down.

  6. My husband died when I was 48 (33years ago) so I have got use to him not being here (still miss him). My fear is that I can not live on my own and I worry about the family.
The books look good for the children.
It seems a nice morning and I am going on the bus to the market just to have a look round.
Have a good weekend Sue and everyone else.

  7. I love spiders and have no problem joining things on my own even though I am quite shy. Am not so brave about driving to places I don't know and not very keen on Daddy Long Legs or heights. Arilx

    1. I'm OK with critters and heights but not keen on driving on very busy roads. I haven't really needed to do much driving to strange places since Colin died but if I want a holiday then I will need to get braver

  8. I'm not afraid of general life things, but I have a bit of a thing against creatures without legs, worms and snakes - ironic for someone who loves gardening. It started when I was about 7 or 8. My big brother was a keen fisherman and would let me play with little lead weights and brightly coloured fishing flies that he kept in old tobacco tins in his fishing jacket. He said he had a new tin for me to play with. I opened it to find it full of worms that he had dug up that morning. I screamed and dropped the lot onto the table. Never liked worms since!

    1. I can see why that would put you off worms for life - brothers can be so cruel!

  9. I'm glad the boiler service went unexpectedly well, that's you safe for another year hopefully.

Yes, the first time I heard a Muntjac scream in the middle of the night I literally froze with fear ... it's alright once you know what it is , phew!!

I've had to conquer most of my fears living on my own as much as I have for the last 17 years. I was a bit cross to find a mouse literally IN my bed one night ... but I think it was more scared than me when I flung back the covers as I was about to get in.

Only the other day I had to carry a little Weasels body out after Ginger had brought it in during the night. Perfect little thing it was, I was more fascinated a being able to see its gorgeous little paws close up than scared.

    1. I needn't have worried about the boiler after all.

I think I was only dreaming when I thought there was a mouse in bed in the middle of the night. I HOPE I was dreaming!

Polly hasn't brought a weasel in yet, just mice, a frog, a mole and the occasional bird

  11. Having recently had to call paramedics in the middle of the night, living on my own in an out of the way place has shifted in focus. Otherwise you just have to get on with it.

  13. I am so glad I don't have a cat because I really don't think I could handle little offering, live or dead, whole or part. The very thought turns me cold!

  14. On the whole I'm pretty ok with most things. I lived on my own before I got married. But I do get a bit jittery with Daddy Long Legs, spiders I'm fine with.

He said the boiler looked good and clean so fingers crossed for the winter

  16. The first four and the last one....shudder...I hate the thought. The one that least worry me is the make-up one. I can't remember the last time I wore it lol.

Mice...since we had to put our poor cat to sleep the mice seem to think our house is fair game. We have a full basement too and now the weather is turning they are looking for somewhere warm for the winter. I hate the thought of them.

  17. Number 4 and the last one are the ones that terrify me. Spiders, snakes, and creepy crawlies don't bother me in the least. Well unless they are grasshoppers or wasps/bees.

    God bless.
