The (2nd) July Library Book Photo

Nowadays I never seem to read every book I request so thank goodness library requests are free in Suffolk!.......they charge in some parts of the country........poor people.

How many of the 10 books or really 12 (the Ngaio Marsh is a 3 in 1) that I'd requested and picked up from the Mobile Library yesterday will be read?

From the bottom up

James Strawbridge - The Artisan Kitchen. This a how-to-do-it book about all forms of preserving and outdoor cooking. I don't want to build a pizza oven or a cold-smoker so this book will go back to the library quite quickly.
Neil Ansell - The Circling sky. One of the books nominated for the Wainwright Prize I've read a couple of his other books.
Ngaio Marsh -  This is the 3 in 1 volume starting with Clutch of Constables. Crime from the 1960's
Hope L Bourne - A Little History of Exmoor. Borrowed  this because of  THIS POST
Hilary McKay -  The Swallows Flight. This is a childrens book. A follow up to The Skylarks War.
Ronald Blythe - Stour Seasons. The 10th collection of his Word from Wormingford columns from The Church Times.Every time I read one of his books I always check he is still alive - and yes, he is now 98 years old! I wonder if he is still living in the wonderfully named Bottomgoms farm on the Suffolk/Essex border.
Chris Nickson - Brass Lives. Crime Fiction latest in a series set in Leeds in 1913
Charles Foster - The Screaming Sky. A small book about Swifts. Also nominated for the Wainwright Prize.
and the 2 on the right are
Jessica Bruder - Nomadland. Borrowing this after watching the film it's only recently been published here.
and finally a British Library Crime Classic - Guilty Creatures - Short Stories from authors from the past.

Quite a variety this time.
Blue, Colors, Competition, Event, Five

Day 6 of the Olympics in the wonderful summer of sport and I turned on the TV just in time for the women's slalom canoe final with a Silver medal for GB. The 18th medal had come at much the same time in the trap (clay pigeon) shooting - and that was a Bronze. I think they were the only medals as there were a couple of 4ths in the rowing including Helen Glover making a comeback after retiring and having 3 children....mad!
Didn't watch much yesterday as the weather was better so it was a grass cutting and weeding day.

Back Tomorrow

  1. Morning Sue. The local large Cancer UK shop in town does all books at 2 for £1 - bargain! So I buy 6 or 8 at a time, anything goes really, at that price I just get whatever takes my fancy on the front cover design! Means I get to read books/authors I haven't necessarily come across before, if I don't get on with them, well I simply give them back to the shop, or pass them on to a neighbour. And it's a cheap way of having a stack of books in the caravan (no good taking library books there, they'd be overdue before I got round to reading them all!).

  2. James Strawbridge. Son of Dick and Brigit,(Dick's first wife) will James fly to fame on his father's coat tails? His mother Brigit of much less fame wrote the book 'Flying with Bees', she is very sweet.

    1. Dick and James worked together on lots of TV programmes back in the day. He is now a chef and sustainable food champion in Cornwall, developing and filming ideas for top brands in the Strawbridge Kitchen. I think he's earned his money without Dicks help!

  3. Here in Devon they charge 75p per book reservation, however, during the last lockdown they waived their charges so I ordered about 30 books over that period!
Daughter L is loving the Olympics, particularly the gymnastics, dressage and diving.

    1. I'd have to think twice before ordering books if I had to pay!

  4. Anything by Hope Bourne is worth reading; there is a DVD about her too that I had some years back.
Re: library request charges, in my experience if the book is within the regional area of the library (ie county) then it was free, If it had tio be requested from outwith the region/county then a charge is made.

    1. Yes the link goes back to 2 posts about Hope Bourne. I had 3 of her books before downsizing but hadn't read this one which luckily is the only one the library had in Reserve Stock

  5. Norfolk Libraries charge 60p for a reservation. Whilst I don't mind this because I rarely put a reservation on a book, I do resent it when they charge me 60p to get it out of their library store because they haven't got room for it on the shelf - and yes, they really do charge you then. During Covid the Library has waived some charges and they have provided a good service although the library is manned by jobsworths at present and is not a pleasant experience to visit. It may have changed a bit since 19 July.

    1. The County Reserve for Suffolk is in Lowestoft. They keep books that are no longer popular and when there is only one copy left in the County. Also old books of local interest.
There still might be a system where every library area keeps fiction books starting with a specific letter of the alphabet. When I worked in Bury St Eds years ago every fiction author beginning He.... was bought and kept for loaning nationwide. Doubt thats still in operation now

    2. They say that the library store is in County Hall. However, I resent having to pay to get a book out of there just because the powers that be at Norwich Library have deemed it necessary to take the book off the shelf. Their reasons are not always purely because a book is no longer popular although I accept that this is the prime reason, I have reason to believe that some decisions are politically motivated.

  7. They charge 75p per reservation in Lancashire. Sometimes I find it's worth my time to use my bus pass and go to another branch to get the book if it's not too far away.

  8. I have been reading a lot lately as it has been warm and humid out so I am staying inside with my A/C!
I have enjoyed peeking at the Olympics from time to time and seeing each athlete do the best they can in that moment. Amazing the amount of work they have done to get there!

  10. I've been enjoying the Olympics too, but we have not seen any of the canoe competitions here. Maybe they are on in the middle of the night here as it is on 24/7.

A good selection of books like that will keep you busy! Enjoy!

  11. Thank you for the critique on "The Keeper of Lost Things". I ordered it from Amazon and loved it. I live in Michigan and have recently downsized. My new home is a mile away from the Central Library for the county but has been closed due to Covid. I need to activate my library card and "check out" what they have.
