In The Greenhouse

Over the weekend I got some better multi-purpose compost and mixed it in with the strange light fluffy stuff from Dobbies (won't buy that again).

Then potted most of the tomato plants and all the cucumber plants into bigger pots. I have room for 8 tomato plants in the greenhouse and 4 in the baskets outside so why have I got 19 tomato plants??. There is room for 2 cucumbers - so I've grown 4 and it's the same for peppers and aubergines - more than I need - hopefully to give some away or just in case of disasters.

I spread things out round the greenhouse so they could all get the light and sowed Climbing French beans and the baby sweetcorn.

It's all looking good - touch wood and praying for no hard frosts.

Back Tomorrow

  1. Your gardening made me laugh this morning I have done the same thing myself. one year I grew 4 cucumber plants which was way too much and in the end I went up and down the road posting cucumbers through letterboxes.

  2. I once had surplus tomatoes and planted them straight into the garden, on a west facing aspect where they actually got good sunlight for a good 8 hours a day and I got a really lovely crop off them. I am sure you can find somewhere to experiment with them!

  5. It would be so good if the last of the frosts happened on a certain date then we could all relax about planting out. We had some bad frost damage this year after that warm spell in February brought everything out quickly. I am waiting until later into May for the outdoor Tomatoes in our region in Yorkshire everything is so much later living so high up in the Pennines near to the moors.
I got that rubbish compost too - I bought some new better stuff too!

  7. we've got a few plant swaps & sales coming up here in May - they seem to be a good fundraiser for local charities.. maybe you could track one down in your own area for your toms? ps: Is there a mini-UFO landed in your garden... (the white domed thing)...

  9. If you don't give your excess away they will sell well at a car boot sale, especially if you label them with their varieties. It's looking very good in the greenhouse.

  12. Do you plant out your tomatoes later in the season or keep them in the greenhouse? Ours have never done well outside so wonder whether we should try to grow them under cover all season.

    1. I keep 7 or 8 in the greenhouse. We used to grow 40 plants at the smallholding when we were growing to sell and they were always in polytunnels. Outside need a long hot growing season but with plenty of water
