There is lots of restoration work going on all round the Cathedral. We had a coffee in the refectory where there was a plan of future building work which will include a larger restaurant and a visitor centre opening April 2020 - we were there a year too soon!
Inside is amazing it has so many different areas and chapels. This is the main nave.

This marks a sad day for the cathedral. It is one of the clergy ringing the Passing Bell. That means that someone connected with the cathedral had died.

DeleteOh I just love cathedrals, the amount of skilled and intricate work that went into creating such huge buildings, so many years ago and without all the power tools and equipment we have today never ceases to totally amaze me. And then of course there are all the beautiful stained glass windows!

ReplyDeleteHaven't read any of his books, so I went and looked it up. It gets very mixed reviews and is nearly 1000 pages long.Not sure I can do historical epics anymore. There is a DVD - might try it. Thank you for the idea
DeleteThe book has lots of detail about building those great medieval cathedrals. The DVD is good but different. I have today visited Leon Cathedral in Spain - blown away by the stained glass!

DeleteIts a lovely Cathedral Sue we have been many times as for a time my son was is on the autistic spectrum and cathedrals were his thing for a while. Did you manage to find the Imp? Funnily enough he was only there on Friday with his school.

ReplyDeleteIt is a gorgeous cathedral. Too big to take in on one day. The National Cathedral here in Washington has taken many of the elements in European cathedrals in its construction.
Beautiful building but much nicer before they replaced the wooden pews for plastic chairs. Yes, I understand the space can be used for other things but still....Also as someone said ,the high price of entry puts you off. There is a lovely shop just inside the front doors. You don't need to pay for that.

ReplyDeleteMy home cathedral really as I was brought up near it and went to school at the Girls' High School next to it. We had services often in the Cathedral. The circular stained glass window is called The Bishop's Eye.

You've educated me today, Sue, I've never heard of a Passing Bell. The stained glass windows are beautiful! I must take a 'visitors' visit to our Cathedral. When I go there, it's only for a quick stop to the chapel at the end to light a candle and you don't have to pay at the door then. So I must go in sometime, do the tourist thing, pay my dues and take some photos. Yours were lovely by the way :)
ReplyDeleteI have wanted to go there to see the cathedral and visit Katherine Swynford's grave - a big fan since reading Anya Seton's novel when I was 13. I suspect the renovation will be complete by the time I get there!

What a magnificent cathedral......I have been to Lincoln, but just passing through to York so never got a chance to visit.....I live near Canterbury Cathedral which is also beautiful and so much history.....
