The May Library Book Photo

Another wonderful collection of library books this month. They are all ones I've ordered but some are by authors I know nothing about so I must have seen mention of them somewhere.

The new to me authors are Caroline Goldsworthy, Vanessa Robertson, Jonathon Coe and Kate Atkinson. Apart from all the crime there are a couple of non-fiction to look at.
I'll let you know how I get on - I think the Jacqueline Winspear  will be read  first after I've worked my way through an old crime book .....Christopher Bush ...Murder at Fenwold reprinted by Dean Street Press, it's a bit complicated - lots of characters, only known by their surnames

Below are the books collected last month and I actually read them all - quite unusual - the details are on the Books Read 2019 page along with other books read last month, some leftover from March and some of my own.

The poor library van driver was in a tizz, THEY - in their wisdom have decided to scrap the 3 large purpose made  library vans and swap them for small box vans with no facilities and virtually no space for books. He says that's it.......... he will leave - don't blame him. I thought when Suffolk County Council handed management of libraries to a Community Interest Group they would have more sense than the high-up's in the council, but obviously not. I know this has already happened in other parts of the country but I can't see how it will save money.

Back Tomorrow

  1. That's such a shame about the library vans. Don't they see the damage they could be doing. I'm very sorry for the driver/library person.
    Enjoy those books

    1. Imagine trying to work in a plastic box with no windows and no storage and the cab will be separate from the rest and the van he has is only 10 years old!

  2. What is the point of mobile library vans if there isn't adequate space for books? It must be so frustrating for the library driver.

  3. I fear this is the thin end of the wedge for your mobile libraries, this is exactly what happened in Dorset, result no mobile libraries and very few Libraries, (and soon no A & E but that’s another story) Good luck with your haul.

    1. They might just as well say they can't afford to run mobile libraries and pack up completely

  5. I love Kate Atkinson! There are a couple of her latest books which I haven't enjoyed so much (they veer off into fantasy-land), but the detective ones are superb. Her first book, Behind the Scenes of the Museum, is still one of my faves, and unusually for me, have read it several times. Enjoy!

    2. One of her best detective books is 'Left early, Took the dog', published 10? years ago. It took me a re-read of a couple of her books to get into her style, and I found the latest 2 books were just too wierd for me, (fortunately borrowed from library and not bought). Good luck!

  6. Another Joy Ellis fan. I take it you are reading these in sequence? I've got to the end, and have put them all aside for husband to read if he ever gets the time - probably not until he retires! Mine are all very cheap, second-hand from A*****. They will eventually go to the charity shop to be enjoyed again. I buy all my novels this way - and it surprising how many of them are ex-library and barely read!

    1. I have a small library 4 miles away with very odd opening hours which I will have to use to collect books from if the mobile stops

  8. Interesting comment from Gillian re. Kate Atkinson. After seeing some of my blog readers eulogising about Kate A I decided I must be missing something and set to putting this right. Charity shops are full of her books so no great difficulty in finding one for £1. I made myself comfortable to catch up what I had obviously been missing for all these years. I struggled through three chapters. It did nothing for me, I thought I must carry on. I struggled through another 20 pages. Nope. She just didn't do it for me. I can't remember the title of the one I picked up but it was certainly not a detective type story but it was a title many people were raving about. Anyway, I used it to light the fire during the winter.

  9. Our Councils (at home and in Scotland) are picking off the libraries one by one and the mobiles are going. I hear from someone I know who works in the library that libraries in general will be a thing of the past soon.

    1. The fixed libraries are run by community interest groups and mainly volunteers and seem to be OK - at the moment

  10. With Kate Atkinson I've enjoyed some books but not others. I did just finish "Transcription", which I really enjoyed.
I am really behind on my Jacqueline Winspear series - I own them all but I've been reading so many library books that I haven't got to my huge pile of books!
Very sorry about the book van issue - is there nowhere to protest to about this?

The library van thing seems to have been settled without any consultation

  11. Sorry about the stupid decision over the library vans - sounds like the beginning of the end doesn't it? No room for books, for heaven's sake!!

Interested to see the Joanna Cannon book there - what did you make of it? I only knew her for a couple of pony books in my childhood - and the fact that she was mum to those prolific (and enviable to me, for their horsyness!) sisters - Josephine, Diana and Christine Pullein-Thomson.

You have a lovely new pile of books to tackle. I need a bit more spare time to read my pile!

    1. I think that must be a different person you are thinking of. This Joanna Cannon has written two books both recently. The first was The Trouble with Goats and Sheep which is about secrets from childhood and was very good and this one which is about secrets in old age - also good

  12. You must read immediately The case of the missing library books by Ian Samson. When a town revolts against library cuts! In fact send a copy to that management committee.

  14. It's been years since I used a mobile library. I don't think they have too many of them in this province. Perhaps in the bigger centers.

    Enjoy your books.

    God bless.

  15. What is meant to happen when it's raining? How are you all to look at the books without getting both them and you soaked.

What a bloody stupid idea - email to local newspaper?

  16. Lots of good stuff there, and a reminder that I need to catch up on the latest Jacqueline Winspear.
