Another Vegetarian Taste-Test

Keep trying and one day there will be something worth buying again...........

But probably not these

After 40+ years of cooking from scratch everyday, now I'm on my own it's good to sometimes have something that can be kept in the freezer and made into a meal in half an hour without any effort and these fit the bill and looked good but they didn't have a lot of flavour. They were a good size and a nice firm texture but not tasty enough to bother with again.

  1. A lot of these vegetarian bakes sound lovely on the packet but less exciting when you eat them. I used to make my own, Rose Elliot's book had plenty of recipes but like you something in the freezer already made is the easier option.

    1. It's so disappointing - they ought to be better

  2. I am never tempted to even try them - reading your reports, I see I was right not to bother! It's like the difference between a "boughten" quiche and one you make at home - flavour, texture everything different - and the boughten one always tasteless. Every time I bought a pizza for a quick meal (when Tam was with us) I was disappointed too. Best just to do cheese on toast when you can't be faffed - that's what we had one night last week when I'd been busy in the garden.

    1. A quiche is something I do make at home and it lasts me 4 days!

  3. We've tried a few vegetarian ready made things and pretty much all of them seem to lack flavour.

    1. Only a couple of the things I've tried have been worth buying again - but I'm ever hopeful

  4. I have my vegan Grandchildren with two small children coming during JULY for the weekend -what on earth to feed them on?

  5. They all taste the same despite different ingredients.

  6. They sound delicious, obviously I couldn't have them due to the avocado and the cheese but it's nice to experiment isn't it. I had a shop bought 'cheeze and onion' pasty last night ... never again. Homemade is SO much better.

    1. The cheese was the only bit that seemed to be recognizable!

  7. As a life long vegetarian I have also found these meat replacement items tasteless and sometimes inedible. Cranks recipes are usually very tasty, their nut loaf and I do a veggie cottage pie, for me without the potato topping as too high in carbs but onions, garlic, courgette, peppers, aubergine, lots of herbs, some black pepper and pulses if you can tolerate them all make tasty alternatives that can be frozen in small portions. I know it means a cooking session to fill the freezer but great to take stuff out all ready done. It’s soup weather in Dorset today, the ground has reached saturation point. Sarah Browne.

    1. I've had a couple of almost inedibles and some tasteless and yes I do batch cook somethings but can't eat pulses or seeds at all which cuts out several recipes.

  8. If only they could make it taste as good as it looks in the picture on the box!

  10. I love your plate. I have a couple of friends that are vegetarians and I must say I always prefer meals that they have prepared themselves rather than if they give me a pre-prepared item. Good to see your tasting so that when they come to stay with me, I can get something for them.

  11. I can highly recommend Plant Pioneers Smoky Jackfruit burgers. £2.50 for pack of 2 from Sainsbobs. They are chilled but I freeze them.

    1. I never go to Sainsburys as the nearest is many miles away but I've heard other people say that Jack Fruit is a good meat substitute

  12. They look tasty but the plate of salad looks even tastier! Thanks for the review. I don't think I'll be buying any of those. I love the pretty plate though!

My homemade veggie burgers I love, but occasionally find a good one eating out..I don’t go inside restaurants during this Covid…but here in Florida easy to eat outside…the packaged veggie food I don’t buy.
