What have I been doing this week?
In the glorious warmth and sunshine on Tuesday and Wednesday I sat out for a little while just lapping it up. Overnight Wednesday/Thursday there was supposed to be thunderstorms and heavy rain which were going to fill my new water butts but we had no thunder or lightening and just a bit of rain but then yesterday morning there was another few hours which has done the plants a power of good and at last filled the water butts.
Lots more gardening done with Alstroemeria, Osteospermum, Sweetcorn, Leeks and French Climbing Beans planted out.The canes are up ready for Runner beans later and I've left a space for some Brassica plants coming in July. That just leaves me with 3 squash plants to squeeze in somewhere they can spread.
After visiting the midweek boot sale I popped into town for fruit and veg and to check out all the dire warnings of food shortages. Someone had mentioned Aldi were limiting how much people could buy of some items but everything looked OK to me, so shortages haven't reached Suffolk yet but I have a feeling it may well happen as so much of last years wheat is stuck in Ukraine and there will be nowhere to store this years crop if it gets harvested.
My Flowers on the Table bookshelves this week is the only Iris from the garden. It was hidden in the border behind the greenhouse, so might as well bring it in for a day or two where I can see it.
This week I've been grateful for
- A visit from my cousin and her husband
- Lots of gardening done
- Discovering something new to watch on TV
So that's what I been doing this week .......Not a lot really.....nothing to moan about or to get stressed about ....I try and avoid all that!
The diary is a bit empty for the weekend but I shall find something to do.
I watched the new Eat Well For Less - but its becoming a bit repetitive, even with a new presenter. On the other hand, maybe some families will appreciate it this time round, if they are struggling now with their food bills.
ReplyDeleteMight watch it on Catch up but it worries me at how many people live on the brink of debt all the time
DeleteWe love the colours of that iris. F loves irises but snails ate all ours in our uk garden. Who would have thought? It turned into a battle we couldn't win, and F believes in going with what thrives instead of battling for stuff that struggles.
ReplyDeleteI was sad the Iris only lasted 3 days indoors - hope it has more flowers next year
DeleteDo you watch Kevin Costner in Yellowstone on 5USA? Not a bad series.
ReplyDeleteYes, I'm waiting for a new series sometime - That's even more violent !
DeleteI've been enjoying a further series of My Unique B&B. Love the ideas they have for some of the places they transform, but I will pass on going to stay inside a combine harvester!
ReplyDeleteI don't get to watch much tv as so busy "doing" here. Catching up on a few family history orientated programmes this week though.
End of stables sorted for delivery of flatpack kitchen soon, and the weekend sees me making space in Keith's workshop for the carpenter installing it to put his work benches out. Then there's the lawn . . .
Too much time on my hands...... but TV is company and sometimes I'm reading too.
DeleteHope the kitchen is soon done
I know why you didn't receive that thunder storm - it had crossed the world and was hammering us!! We had a really intense storm with lots of thunder and lightning, a deluge of rain (much needed in the garden) and even a spurt of hail.
ReplyDeleteEnjoy your weekend :) xx
Love a good thunderstorm - as long as it doesn't affect the electricity supply!
DeleteWe are going into the dreadful heat for the next couple of days. I do not like 90's and high humidity. and there is a chance of hail and damaging winds both days. not great for the gardens. I have not heard to much about food shortages here in the US but I fear it is coming. I got us stocked up a while ago and as I use it I replace it so we are good for a bit. I did buy an extra bag of flour last week I like to bake mostly in the fall and winter but I do some in the summer mostly breads.
ReplyDeleteI love your plates and have been on the lookout for them here. Not that I will ever find them here but I can dream .
Cathy
There's bound to be some of The Country Diary plates somewhere in the US - but you have a big country to search through!!
DeleteI'm glad you got the rain to fill your water butts. Your garden sounds wonderful and everything is growing very well. With your renewed water supply, I'd consider this perfect. My 3 red poppies, new meadow and a few new trees are growing well.(The deer have eaten nothing!) We are bracing for 90-100 degree heat this weekend and I'll have to water. Like you, I take great pleasure growing and working the soil.
ReplyDeleteI'm enjoying my new garden - small but much easier for me to cope with on my own
DeleteSounds like a busy, pleasant week for you. I have my daughter coming over this afternoon and we will watch a movie before dinner. I saw "Operation Mincemeat" recommended on another blog so we will watch it on Netflix. Based on a true story which you may have heard of - "a British deception operation of the Second World War".
ReplyDeleteI am always happy to spend time with my daughter!
I had every intention of going to watch Operation Mincemeat at the cinema but then just didn't get round to it. I'll have to wait for it on DVD - 2025!
DeleteHello Mr. Hare...(or Mrs) x
ReplyDeleteBack again every month!
DeleteBeautiful iris; good you found it.
ReplyDeleteUnusual colour I think
DeleteThere was a good section on the Iris in last Friday's Gardener's World. Bearded mainly but such wonderful colours. I think the beard is more like a furry tongue sticking out !
ReplyDeleteI missed that - never had much luck with Irises anywhere I've lived
DeleteI am commenting today as this is the first time for ages that I have been able to do so. I enjoy reading your blog very much even if I am unable to comment.Catriona
ReplyDeleteThank you, hope you are able to comment again
ReplyDeleteIdris Elba is a brilliant actor isn't he, and I've been very tempted to watch all the series of Luther again either on iPlayer or some other medium. And yes, I'm looking forward to this series of Silent Witness with Amanda Burton back for the series.
ReplyDeleteNope we have nothing to moan about or to stress over, although some people do find lots even in the day to day living we are all going through. I just try to take each day as it comes and look for the bright spots.
I have been loving your flower plates and still life displays. I need to find some plates like that. My iris are blooming right now. I have the old light purple variety that smells like grapes. I need to bring some in as well.
ReplyDeleteI love that colour combination on the iris. They are the only flower I can think of that have brown petals. Have just been admiring some more on the Chelsea Flower show tonight. Arilx
ReplyDeleteLove Silent Witness so I am going to have to keep an eye open for the new season on Britbox.
ReplyDeleteGod bless.
I think I watched maybe the first two seasons of Luther and then sort of forgot about it - to be honest! I might have to go back and revisit. I've been watching lots of Silent Witness. It's a bit stiff in places, but something to put on when there's nothing else to watch. Our television bill went up again so husband is cancelling it all tomorrow (yikes). We've been talking about it for a while, but have decided that now is the time. We don't watch a lot of television (the programmes are rubbish over here) and watch more streaming services (where I can get some nice British shows lol). The couple of shows that we do watch you can buy seasons of them and watch as they are released which - even with the cost - is cheaper than the television subscription.
