It Must be the Smoked Paprika..................

........that gives this recipe some flavour.

I like to look at a different cookery book now and again, vegan, vegetarian or whatever. (Only library books - I don't buy them).

This recipe sounded easy and then I found yellow-sticker-reduced chestnut mushrooms at the Co-op so had to give it a go. The only thing I didn't have was smoked paprika so I used ordinary paprika and  a fresh onion instead of onion powder and ordinary long-life single cream instead of soy-cream.

It looked right, just like the photo in the book

But not a lot of ooommph................. Need to try again with the smoked paprika.

Cooking for one is sometimes a faff but this is simple enough to do, there's lot's of recipes that I just can't be bothered with anymore.

I brought home this book below from the library van, it's got some nice things in it - if someone would cook them for me! Each recipe had about 20+ ingredients, often using part of a tin or packet or fresh item.....not much good for one person.

  1. Smoked paprika makes things taste totally different to 'normal' paprika; I saw it on a tv cookery prog ages ago and have used it ever since. I find cooking for one is such a drag - seems to take ages - now I almost always make at least enough for one freezer portion.

  2. As someone who cooks for one most of the time, I know exactly what you mean! A long list of ingredients is so off putting and one doesn't always want to eat one and freeze three.
Smoked paprika is a different flavour - worth looking for. I use mine a fair amount.

  3. I don't mind cooking for one but usually stick to what I know and like and have been cooking for years. I am not particularly adventurous! I like basic English food and salads are a boiled egg and a slice of ham with lettuce and tomato!

  4. The recipe looks tasty and I'm sure the smoked paprika would have given a very different flavour.
I'm also put off by recipes that require too many ingredients. I find simple is usually best. X

  5. It does add a lot of flavour. I only use smoked now, both hot and mild.

  7. I prefer mild smoked paprika. I get mine in TKMaxx - an odd place for food shopping, but they frequently have really pretty tins of it, dirt cheap, in their "foodie gifts" aisle. I'm a sucker for a pretty tin!

  8. I am just ever so slightly addicted to smoked paprika. I love it mixed 50/50 with salt on chips! I get mine on Amazon in a very pretty Spanish tin, along with Old Bay Seasoning, which is also addictive if you like it.

  9. I like your new photo. And it's silly but I like using the tins of smoked paprika rather than the jars as it makes me think I'm cooking something more interesting.

  12. Love the new header. Your plants look wonderful. As for dinner meal prep I'm mostly retired since here at Vantage House we have one meal a day to choose from an extensive menu. Husband and I can have different things. I do cook occasionally. Had friends for dinner and I made meatloaf, mashed potatoes, and a sugar snap pea stir fry with onions and peppers. Guest brought a salad and dessert. We had fun.

  13. Smoked paprika does add a different taste. I am not sure I like it, but will keep giving it a try.

It does look very tasty though.

    God bless.

  15. The Happy Pear books are brilliant, although the recipes make huge portions and are very spicy. I know now to use less of each of the spices that they suggest in each recipe,.but the meals all turnout perfectly. They are great to watch on YouTube too.

Smoked Paprika is a completely different taste to the usual stuff. Adding some chilli flakes and a bit of turmeric to the dish would get you closer to the right flavour.

  16. It looks delicious, Sue, even if it didn't hit the mark flavour wise. I've got ordinary paprika and smoked, but saw a recipe the other day requiring sweet paprika. I didn't even realise that was a thing!
Although there are 3 in our household at the moment, quite often there is just me for evening meal. I've got a really good book by Miguel Barclay One Pound Meals (not sure I only spend £1) the recipes are for one and you just double up etc if needed. Might be worth ordering from the library for a perusal:)

  18. Like everyone else I totally agree about cooking for one.....what annoys me are the recipes that sound wonderful only to find a huge list of ingredients asking for 1 tspn of this and part of a packet of that when you know you won’t be using the rest of it....such a waste of money. I like recipes that have 4 or 5 ingredients that you know are not going to cost you an arm and a leg....
