Local Elections

Colin always used to laugh at me when I voted for the Green Party in local or national elections. He would mutter about them all being a bit weird and never getting elected so I was wasting a vote (but as no one other than Conservatives ever got elected in Suffolk Coastal it was more of a protest vote anyway!)

But I hope if he had been alive to vote in local District Council elections this year he too would have voted Green because this guy was a Cub Scout in my pack when I first started helping, has been a very good District Councillor for the neighbouring ward  and a County Councillor too, and has lived just down the road from where Colin lived and where his brother still lives for all his life.

And when I've seen him at  local events in the last two years he still recognises me - which is amazing seeing as we were across the other side of Suffolk for so long.

With the boundary changes for election wards he is hoping to become a councillor for the new much bigger area.

I popped down to the village to vote and thanked-the-Lord that I wasn't sitting there in a chilly village hall being a polling-clerk for 15 hours like I have done in the past!

Back Tomorrow

  2. I agree with Joy and jan b. I never know who to vote for in local elections as I don't know any of the candidates or their reputations. We had two elections here, Parish and Council, (I don't know if everybody had two). I chose the lady who works at the local Spar shop for the Parish because my husband says she is nice and I've nothing else to go on. For the Council I voted for the first to drop a leaflet through the door. He looked good and I liked what I read about him. I hope my votes weren't wasted and they go on to keep their promises.

    1. We only had District Council in this Ward.(and only a choice of one out of two people, although other Wards had a bigger choice) I looked on line to see about Parish and they all seemed to be elected automatically because there wasn't enough people to fill the spaces

    2. We had to choose out of five for the Council and eleven for the Parish. As I don't know one from the other, it was a difficult choice, but I never waste my vote.

  3. Dan has been a Polling Clerk a number of times over the years, he hasn't done it for a long time though, he's very relieved about that! He has been roped in to do the count today though as they were struggling for volunteers, counting is only a few hours and in a nice warm sports hall at least.

  4. We only had two parties to choose from, and as one of them have been doing an ok job for so long might as well let them stay.

  5. Not much choice here. I ended up only using 2 of my 3 votes...

  6. I always vote for the Green candidate - we always need a good mix of views I think especially on the local Council.

  7. No choice here. Only one candidate, so he was a shoe-in! (And not who I would have chosen had we been given a choice.)

  8. It's so annoying when a certain party gets an almost guaranteed return, but it does allow us to protest with our vote. However, isn't it thrilling when the incumbent occupant is overthrown? Good luck to your chap!

  10. We are having a school levy election May 21 here in northern Idaho USA. I will be a poll worker (actually, the elections judge for the precinct this time), which I have been doing in one election or another for the last 11 years. My first election was when Obama ran the first time, and we were so swamped by voters that it is amazing I ever came back for more. Now we are gearing up for 2020, and I think I might call in sick, LOL. This school election is expected to have a low turnout, which means I will be training poll workers for the 2020 elections. It's interesting to see that some of you have worked the elections. Our polls are open from 8 to 8, but it usually takes 2 more hours to get things ready and cleaned up afterward.

PS I would have voted for the Cub Scout, too!
