View Over the Village Mid May

Thought it would be interesting to chart the changing seasons over the village by walking up the lane and taking photos from the one very small hill close to home.

My May walk was on the 17th and I saw my first Painted Lady Butterfly of the year

This singing fella below sounded like a skylark but it was so far away it could be something else.
From part way up the lane without zoom

First Dog Rose of the season and Cow Parsley everywhere

Zooming in from a bit higher and the church tower appears, wheat field on the left.

Spotted an Elder that I'd not noticed before. There are surprisingly few around so I like to note where I see them ready for making Elderberry Syrup in the Autumn. Last year I picked most from just over the road from home because the road was closed and there wasn't much traffic and I could climb up the bank without fear of being run over!. But this Elder tree will be easier to harvest.
And finally zooming in from the 'highest' part of the lane (not high at all compared to most of the country!) Sugar Beet growing in this field and in the centre of the photo a huge pile of sweet smelling pig or cow muck that has been dumped, somewhat oddly, in the middle of the wheat field. It will be even more pongy when it's spread after harvest.

Then half a mile back down the hill and home.

I'll write myself a note to remind me to take the photos again in mid June.

Back Tomorrow
Sue

  2. What a lovely wander. I would appreciate the flatness - we are all hills round here! I hope your Cow Parsley is left to set seed - in Carmarthenshire they just want to eradicate it entirely. It is apparently a danger to traffic! Perhaps people should slow down on country lanes then.

I'm glad you found another Elder. There are some in the hedgerows towards town, and I have also marked some stout uncut Blackthorns on a bank so hopefully there will be Sloes this autumn.

    1. I'm not sure how I missed this one in the autumn when I was looking for berries - unless someone pinched them before I got there

  3. We too are all hills (Devon) so the flatness and large skies are a novelty and rather nice. Can't identify that bird though... not that I'm any expert.

  4. I'm very pleased that we now have a substantial Elder in our garden. In fact it will soon need a trim! x

    1. The Black Elder here is getting bigger but the berries were teeny last year - not like proper Elder at all

  8. Another one who would appreciate the flatness, Dorset is all hills here, and hill forts or long barrows, even the fields slope! I have my eyes on Blackberry flowers, just forming, I leave the sloes for others. We are so lucky in the village, if the field gates are open then you can walk through on the track, if closed, stay away, simple message that everyone obeys. Sarah Browne.

  10. Beautiful, and I do love Dog Roses. Isn't it a prolific year for Cow Parsley this year.

  11. I just showed the bird picture to my husband, as he is far better at identifying birds than I am, and he said it is a whitethroat, because of the crest.

    1. I was zooming in from too far to see it's colours but whatever it was it was doing a lot of singing!

  12. Cow parsley abundant round here too, and the crops in the fields seem to have doubled in size overnight! Well a slight exaggeration but they are growing fast. Some lovely scents around here - not manure - yet! Rape is abating but may hedges in bloom, flowering shrubs and bushes as you pass people's homes - still some lilacs but mainly fields of broad beans. I really appreciate being close to open countryside as a nice walk lifts the spirits. Keep taking those photos.

    1. You're right about speed of growth this year. The trees over the road in the churchyard went from nothing much to fully covered in a week and my view suddenly disappeared!

  14. You are surrounded with very beautiful views. The wheat and beet fields are growing very well. The green fields are really lovely. Wait til the wheat field turns gold and it will be amazing. I have never seen a pile of muck that large... Best fertilizer ever!
